"You're what?" Jared asked in disbelief.
"Pregnant," I repeated. I couldn't believe it either. Jared looks like he's about to faint, then, a big smile spreads over his face.
All of a sudden, I get a chorus of, "Congratulations!" in my head. Even from people I haven't met yet, that lived in separate homes. I think I heard Kelley's voice in there somewhere. Oh, no he didn't.
"You told them!" I shouted. I tried to sound angry but I couldn't hide the smile on my face. Jared ran up and hugged me. I was literally swept off my feet and spun. Okay, not the reaction I thought about.
"We're having a pup!" He practically yells.
"You're very excited, huh?" I ask. He pulls away and looks me in the eyes.
"Aren't you?"
"Well, yeah, but don't you think this is happening a little fast?"
"I sense that you're worried. Don't be. If fate wants us to have a baby, then that's what will happen." I put my head against his chest.
"I just..." I trail off.
"What is it?" His voice has a calming effect.
"I just, I want to be a good mother. I want to be like my mother." A tear slips down my cheek as he pulls me tighter.
"I know, it's okay. You will be." He pulls me back to look at me and wipes away the tear. "You will be a great mother."
Someone knocks on the door and I feel a flash of frustration run through Jared. "Yes?"
"It's Fionna. We have a situation downstairs," came the voice. I remove myself from Jared, and run to the door to open it. Fionna rushes in followed by Dylan and they look worried. We hear a crash from downstairs and a small cry of pain.
"Whats happening?" Jared appears beside me and speaks before I do.
"We caught a wolf running on our turf. He's not from around here. He attacked Terry while he was on patrol and the boys are holding him downstairs." Dylan says. Jared burst out the door way and I start to follow him, but he stops me.
"You're staying here. I don't want you or the baby hurt."
"No I'm not. This is my pack too, and I'll be damned if I'm not a part of it." He smiles a little then rushes out and I follow him. We get downstairs and find Terry lying on the couch, moaning. Fionna runs to his side and starts to cry.
"It's okay, baby. You're going to get through this," she whispers.
"Where's Cherry?" I ask. She should be with her brother. Just then, I hear the same whimper of pain that we heard from upstairs coming from the kitchen. I run into the kitchen and find Cherry with a knife pushed into her arm. I run over to her.
"Why are you always the one who gets picked on?" I give a little chuckle as she looks at me with teary eyes. "This is going to hurt. You ready?" She gives a small nod and I yank the knife out. She gives a scream of pain. I grab a kitchen towel and wrap it around her arm. The blood almost instantly soaks through so I grab another one and double wrap it. I carry her into the living room and set her on the chair next to her brother. Terry's head is bandaged with a small amount of blood peeking through the gauze. He has a black eye and a swollen lip. His right arm is in a splint. What did this guy do to us?
Just then I feel a stab of pain in my side and my eyes go wide. Jared! I run to the other end of the house, following our bond. I get to the gardens and see Jared, Emilie, and Kerren going against a giant black wolf with white paws. Blood is pouring from Kerrens eye. That must be why Emilie is here. I shift and run to stand next to Jared. I look and see his fur is matted with blood from where the wolf got him. With a growl, I leap at the wolf, who jumps at the same time and pins me. I freeze as I smell his scent. This wolf is from the same pack as the guy that killed my mother. I snap back to reality as his teeth drive forward. I felt his claws digging into my fur and I snap my jaws shut on his neck just before he reaches mine. He gets off me with a whimper.
'Your pack member killed my mother!' I say with a growl, standing up.
'Oh, so you're the whores daughter. Funny, I was expecting more, what's the word, flare.' He responds with a laugh. I bare my teeth and lunge with a growl. He dodges and I crash-land.
'You need to calm down. Rage won't do anything,' I hear Connie say. I take a deep breath.
'We have a habit of killing mothers. We killed Jared's, too, you know. Oh, how her screams were pleasant. I hear you're having a pup. Looks like you're next.' He growls. My eyes flash toward Jared and he has the same look of rage mixed with surprise. My eyes narrow as we both jump at the wolf. He dodges to the left, and Kerren rams him. Jared jumps on the wolf and starts to tear at his fur. Blood pours out of unseen cuts and Kerren and Jared rip him apart. I stand motionless next to Emilie, who is growling like crazy. How did he know about my baby? I just found out an hour ago. He killed Jared's mother. And mine. I wonder how many others he's killed. How long has this pack been going after ours? There are too many questions running through my head.
'We need two more wolves out here, now!' I command.
'Got it!'
'Me too!' I hear two voices then simultaneous howls. Dylan and Glenn run out to the courtyard.
'We need to get Kerren and Jared off that wolf. We can't have him dying on us before we find out where he's from.' I order.
Dylan shoves Jared off and Glenn shoves Kerren off. Emilie goes and stands next to Kerren, calming him. Jared lunges back to attack but Dylan pins him down. 'Jared,' I say. He looks at me with pain and anger in his eyes and stops fighting for a second. I walk over and nuzzle him with my nose. 'We won't let this pack continue. We need to keep him alive in order for that to happen. We will find them.' Jared stops struggling. Dylan gets off Jared as the wolf shifts back to human form. He's naked, of course, with cuts and gashes everywhere. There is blood everywhere and I feel sick. I turn toward the bushes and vomit everything I ate that day.
It starts to get dark as we put the lock on his cage. We found out that this wolf was from a pack called The Death Riders, and his name is Iren, but that's it for now.
We are all back in human form, dressed in un-ripped clothes. Jared is shirtless with a giant bandage around his waist. I have small cuts everywhere, but nothing major. Cherry will be back to normal in a week or two once her arm heals and Terry will be fine in about two days. We had called a doctor earlier, who said Terry had a small concussion, and a broken arm, but otherwise, fine. She said Cherry would have a scar, but luckily, the knife missed any vital tendons or veins. Kerren would have a scar across his eye from now on.
"Battle scars. Chicks dig 'em" He had said with a smile. Luckily, no one was killed. Jared was made to rest, but he refused. Now, I'm curled up on the couch, his arm wrapped around me.
"Jared?" I looked up at him. He seemed distracted since he found out about Iren's pack killing his mother.
"Hmm?" He looked down at me.
"I'm sorry about your mom." He looks away and I can almost feel the tears sliding down his cheek. I turn his head back to my face and give him a small but passionate kiss on the lips. "How do you think they found out about our baby?" His eyes grew cold.
"I think we have a leak." He says, looking around.
"What's that?"
"I think someone in our pack has been informing people in The Death Riders of what's happening." My eyes grow wide. No, this can't be happening. It's too much. Too much.
