You placed a hand over your forehead, letting out an exasperated sigh. Your eyes were resistant towards flickering up, yet her undeniable presence was making you unable to concentrate and focus on anything else besides her.
Despite her short stature, you felt as if she were towering over you, and that persistent sensation only increased when having her stand on a stool to face you over the laptop you'd set in front of you.
"Dude, c'mon." She insisted, for what you counted as the fourth time since having arrived next to you.
Though you still hadn't faced her, you were certain she now had to have her arms crossed stubbornly over her chest with the way those words had come out.
"You've been stuck here for five hours now." She continued, a hint of concern visible over her tone. "Have you even eaten anything yet?"
"I don't have time for that." You spoke, letting out a quiet huff as you continued to type away your thoughts. "I'll fail the class if I don't turn this in by the seventeen of next month."
"Next month." She retorted, emphasizing the word 'next' by reaching out for you and squeezing the hand you'd placed over the mouse.
You could feel your body jolt in response to her touch, though you tried to shake the feeling away. The straight line that were your lips turned into a frown as you finally met with her eyes, an unenthusiastic expression painted clear on your face.
"It's a big project." You insisted. "I have to work on it with any chance I get."
"Yeah, but I don't think skipping a meal counts as a 'chance'." She countered, eyebrows furrowing as she never once broke her gaze away from yours.
You were expecting for her to make air quotes on the final word - perhaps, even roll her eyes at the end of her sentence - yet all she did was stare at you with a worried frown, an emotion which she often tried to hide from you, one that she often refused to show much.
"That's just a basic human need - one that you need to stay alive."
You removed your hand from the mouse after she finished with those words, giving a quick once over to the laptop's screen afterwards. The stubbornness from before melted away with one final sigh and you found yourself pressing the 'save' button of the file you were working on, making sure to close the device seconds after it turned off.
The chair bellow you creaked as you pulled away from the desk and stood back on your feet, a moment of imbalance presenting itself due to your legs having fallen asleep after long hours of working in front of a monitor.
You dusted off your clothing and fetched the backpack you'd placed next to the desk. Then, you put the laptop away, slumping the backpack over your shoulder and looking at the state of your appearance through the reflection of the metal surface of a nearby bookshelf, making sure to brush away stray stands of hair behind your ears and check your face for any smudges.
Finally ready to go, you faced with her again.
"Alright. . ." You mumbled, eyes trailing away from her presence. "Let's go for a quick bite - It'll be my treat."
-------------------------
The deafening noise of the departing train flooded your ears. Your shouts weren't loud enough to faze through the barrier keeping you away from her, leading you to resort to reaching out for Amethyst by her wrist and stopping her midway during your journey to the diner from next street.
A large crowd had gathered up once the conductor announced the train would be leaving soon, which led for everyone to swarm into the station and eventually trap you with them.
Your hand held firmly onto Amethyst's wrist, in fear you would lose her if your grip wasn't strong enough.
Soon enough, however, you felt her tugging back and - in the mere blink of an eye - you were free from the crowd and in safe grounds again, next to the ticket booth now available for mounting the next train.
"When I say I'll stick around, I mean it." She let out a chortle once she said that, quoting back to the day when your friendship was made official by both her and you.
Afterwards, she reached out for your hair, brushing away some of the strands that'd fallen over your face due to the hectic situation you'd just escaped from.
"Now, c'mon, ________. Let's keep going - We're almost there."
That final statement gave commencement to your walk towards the diner. Your steps were quick as you weren't too keen on wasting time, but the purple-toned woman eventually caught on to your hasty nature and told you to let go - to be free for the moment and enjoy the things surrounding you.
Your response was an unenthusiastic 'alright', though you couldn't deny your surprise at her having read you as easily as she had.
-------------------------
Finally, you arrived at the food and drink establishment, the alluring scent of fries and spices invading your sense of smell.
Unlike the train station, the diner was about as calm as a school on holiday. There were only two other people in line besides you and your companion, and the only workers present to your sight were a cashier and a waiter. The upbeat song playing in the background complimented the environment as well as the hushed voices of the few customers eating their meals at the tables nearby.
You told Amethyst you would order and bring the food to your table, yet insisted you sat down while she did that instead, her chosen tone persistent enough to make you hold back on protesting against it.
With a whispered 'thanks', you were left to wait at the table, alone with only your thoughts and the stories of those around you.
And you thought of many things - more than anything else. You soon forgot about the place you were currently standing on and drifted away in your own, personal inquiries - most of these revolving around Amethyst.
You thought about why she decided to visit you in the first place. You though of why she looked saddened when you refused to take a lunch break. You thought of why she said she'd stick around with you. You thought of why she insisted you sat down while she ordered instead. You thought of -
Your thoughts were interrupted by a tray being set in front of you, the tempting aroma of food invading your nostrils once more.
Startled, you looked at the one who'd set it down, eyes meeting with Amethyst's, who was smiling at you in her typically relaxed manner. The hint of worry she'd carried with her ever since you left the library had faded away and - instead - it was replaced with joy.
"You looked like you were spacing out for once." She remarked, a more amused smile tugging her lips upwards. "How does it feel not to think about work for once?"
"How do you know I wasn't thinking about work?" You countered, posture rising up in a rather proud and defiant manner.
"Because, when you do, your eyebrows are all scrunched up and your eyes look like they haven't blinked in years." She replied, sitting down on the chair set across from you. "Right now, you looked like you were just daydreamin' and chillin' out."
She reached out for her order of fries, grabbing a few before speaking up again.
"You need to set your heart free every once in a while, dude." She added, afterwards biting down on her fries as she gave you a playful wink. "It can be good for you, y'know?"
