You reviewed for the upcoming biology test with each second of free time you could grasp during work. Schoolwork piled up high since the few days you were away from college, and you had to catch up with each opportunity that showed up in front of you.
“Enjoy your meal, miss,” you speak up, directing your words at the customer standing in front of you. You hand her the bag and smile, waiting right until she left the shop to glue your eyes on your phone again. Nasmira had sent you well over eight pages worth of notes for the test, and you were still barely through understanding the first three pages.
“You okay there, (Y/N)?”
You were interrupted mid into the first page you began to read, making a mental note of where you left off at before looking up from your phone.
“Most people don’t look that stressed when they stare at their phone.”
A brighter smile different from the one you directed at your customers crossed your face, seeing Amethyst behind the counter, a worried look showing by the way she raised an eyebrow. You take in a breath and lock your phone before speaking up. “I’m just. . . a little busy with college work,” you reply, placing your hand on the counter. “But what can I get you? Do you want the usual, or--“
“Let’s go outside and chill out for a minute,” Amethyst suggests, an amused look on her face. “I know you’re busy an all, but it won’t help if you pass out or something for being too stressed out.”
Hesitating, you clutch your phone and chew on the inside of your lip, weighing the pros and cons of choosing to go with her to relax for a while. Three days passed since you last saw her, and you still hadn’t taken your fifteen minute break for today. You pretty much focused solely on studying and work ever since your return from the brief, three-day vacation, and it was hard for you to take any sort of break without thinking you would fail the test.
“Alright,” you give in, stifling a laugh. “I guess I am getting too worked up over this -- But are you sure you don’t want anything before we go?”
“I’m sure,” she replies, chuckling. “Now let’s go, you dork!”
You hold back the urge to flinch when feeling her hand reach for your wrist and settle on your hand. She walks you out of the shop, hand interlocked with yours until you reach one of the benches nearby. You both sit next to each other and face the beach, eyes locking on the few seagulls nibbling the fry bits a child threw at them.
Self-consciousness falls upon you the very second you analyze the situation you’re in. Your mind couldn’t stop overthinking ever since your talk with Nasmira discussing your relationship with Amethyst. Anxious, you rack your brain for any possible topic of conversation that could prevent you from thinking about that subject, and scoot away from her a little when taking in her proximity.
“Are you still. . . going out on missions on your own?” you ask, lips forming a concerned frown as you think back on the day you were attacked by a cluster of Gems. Though it wasn’t the lightest topic to speak about during your break, it was still something you couldn’t ignore now that the memory was brought back up. You’d almost forgotten about it with how eventful the vacation had been.
The purple Gem meets with your eyes, a hint of a frown showing on her face. It takes her a minute to respond, the sudden silence making you reach out for her hand and squeeze it to show your support, a subconscious action you process only after hearing her speak up.
“I already dealt with those cluster Gems and all, but. . .” She trails off in her words, a small smile replacing her gloom when casting her eyes down at your intertwined hands. “I kinda just wish I could do something more -- I want to. . . I guess I just want to prove I can do more than what people think.”
Quiet settles between the two of you as you search for the right words to direct at her. You let go of her hand and place your hands on her shoulders instead, a determined look presenting itself on your face. You were onset on showing your support towards her now that she’d opened up to you this much.
“I think you’re pretty great.”
