After two detours -- one at the fountain and one at the pet shop -- it was already one in the afternoon. You decided on going back to join the rest of the gang and selected the line of food trucks first, the breakfast you had with Amethyst already long gone.
The scent of baked goods and fried foods was prominent in the air, making your mouth water and stomach growl. Steven was the first to choose a truck, his attention focused on the artisanal doughnuts a young woman clad in a flower-patterned dress sold. He went with his father, Garnet following along after stating that she trusted Steven’s judgment on selecting what to eat first. The only two people left to make a choice were Pearl and Amethyst, who were both equally focused on analyzing the options, but for entirely different reasons.
What caught your attention were some of the trucks named in different languages. One sold sweets native from the Caribbean, another sold street food known around Latin America, while the final one carried all sorts of dishes from Italy. You settled on the second option, craving something savoury at the moment. The two indecisive Gems noticed where you’d gone off to and -- as such -- didn’t hesitate on accompanying you there.
You couldn’t help smiling at the sight of the two attempting to place an order. It was made clear that -- even though they resided here on Earth for quite some time -- certain things were still new to them. The way they stared in awe at all the options made for a warm feeling to well up on your chest. A sense of gratitude surfaced over you after becoming aware of the thought that the pair felt comfortable being around you -- enough to trust your suggestions over what to pick out of all the options.
Once all six of you were given your orders, you sat down at one of the empty tables available, gathering together to chat about your last day together and how you were all looking forward to having something like this repeat itself in the near future. The mood was light and energetic, the fact that this would end tomorrow and that you had to catch up on accumulated work making you wish this three-day vacation could last a little longer.
“We have to bring Peri and Lapis next time!” Steven exclaimed, gathering everyone’s attention.
“Yeah,” Amethyst agreed, smiling. “This place is awesome -- I’m sure even those two’ll be lured in if we tell them how great this trip was.”
“It certainly is a good change of pace,” Pearl chimed in, a smile of her own decorating her pale features. “All the missions we’ve gone on recently have been quite. . . dangerous, to say the least.”
“What about you, (Y/N)?” Garnet questioned, staring at you. “Did you like it here?”
Thinking over the Gem’s words, you faced your lap, a warm smile making its way to the corners of your lips. You took in a breath and let it out slowly, memories of the past two days -- and even more specifically -- of today at the pet shop making your mind wander. Happy you were able to have this opportunity, your smile widened and you looked straight at her, trying to meet with her eyes despite knowing her visor prevented you from doing just that.
“It’s been really fun,” you replied. “It’s honestly one of the best vacations I’ve had in a while.”
The rest of your lunch break went by like a breeze. You ended up eating a few extra sweets and snacks from two more truck, splurging some of your savings to bring leftovers with you home and share with the rest of the group on the way back. Greg and Steven had insisted on paying for you, yet you refused their offer, telling them you had already planned how much you would spend beforehand.
Your next stop was the lake, one of the three options Amethyst had marked with a circle on the map you went through together. You ended up walking right next to her again, feeling as if the reasons for the pet shop owner’s teasing went beyond the fact that she only wanted to come off as playful.
The way you both walked together spoke for itself.
