The rest of your outing had gone by in full swing. You’d visited the small, artisanal shop the cozy town had offered and tried some of their traditional cuisine, sharing a dessert with Amethyst after being too full to eat it all by yourself.
All in all, it’d been a calm day and you were looking forward to spending more time like this again.
What most concerned you was the position you found yourself in now.
You were sitting with Amethyst on your bed, having called out for her, saying you had something you wanted to tell her. She’d complied to your request without much hesitation, sitting just a tad too close to your side and staring at your eyes for just a little too long for your liking.
“What’s wrong?” she asked, lifting an eyebrow as she placed a hand over yours.
You flinched slightly at her approach, yet you managed to ease into it and allow for her warmth to reach yours. The previous tension you felt faded away when seeing more honest, open concern on her face, enhanced by the ghost of a frown that showed on her mouth.
“You’re not usually like this,” she mentioned, frown being replaced with a small but smug smile. “What happened to the (Y/n) that tackled me to get their juice box back?”
You laughed a little at her comment, shifting slightly on your seat as you moved on to facing her again.
“I’m just. . . worried about you,” you confessed, tightening the hold on her hand as a sad smile showed up on your face. “It’s. . . It just doesn’t feel right to hide this away from everyone -- I wouldn’t know what to do with myself if I saw, or just heard about you getting hurt.”
Silence reigned for what seemed to be centuries, tension weighing down your shoulders as you waited anxiously for her response.
“You don’t need to worry so much about me, y’know?” she spoke up, her voice almost making you jump with how quiet your surroundings had become. “I can take care of myself -- And I’m not just doing this to help Garnet. . .”
She took a pause, a tight smile being quickly brushed away from her face.
“I’m doing this to better myself,” she continued, a more confident expression crossing her face. “And I’m starting to like the results more and more everyday.”
You returned her smile, locking your gaze with hers as you began to let go of her hand, wanting to support her words one way or the other.
Unable to find the right words to respond to her heartfelt confession, you leaned in with caution, waiting to see if she was ready to reject or accept your approach.
As soon as you confirmed she wasn’t, you wrapped your arms behind her upper back and pulled her in for a careful embrace, tightening your hold ever so slightly when feeling her return the hug.
“I’m proud of you, Amethyst,” you muttered, your voice almost in a whisper as seconds passed with the two of you still holding onto one another. “And I’m more than happy getting to spend time like this with you.”
From the corner of your eye, you could see her widen her smile, following up to that expression by letting go you and facing you.
“I’m happy too, (Y/n),” she replied, smile turning into a mischievous smirk. “You’re an awesome (gal/guy) to be around with.”
You smiled back at her, warmth taking over your chest.
