“You have to play a song next time we meet up again,” Amethyst spoke, sitting next to you on the floor of the van.
The morning after your last day of vacation had been composed of yet another cloudy sky, the light gray in their colours warning over possible rain. The van thumped slightly with the bumpy road Pearl was carefully navigating through, and the faint sound of cars zooming past were heard the second she drove away from the hotel.
“Yeah!” Steven agreed, joining you both on the floor. “We can make a duet -- or a band, even!”
“I’d like to hear you play too, (Y/N),” Greg chimed in, a small smile on his face. “I never took you for the type who liked to play (fave instrument).”
“I, uh. . . I don’t really have the time to play as much as I used to back then,” you explained, an awkward laugh following after your words. “I used to play a lot during my high school years, but. . . That changed as soon as I entered college a few months ago.”
“I can help you with that,” Steven spoke, an amicable smile showing on his round face. “Do you have any songs you like?”
“Well. . .” You trailed off on your words, casting a sheepish smile his way. “I kinda have (fave song) burned in my mind, so I guess that could be a start.”
“Great!” The half Gem jumped off his seat on the floor, offering a hand out to you after standing on both feet.
Smiling, you took his hand and allowed him to help you off the floor. You dusted off your clothes and followed him to the few seats the van had to offer. Steven took his cellphone and clicked on the WeTube app, typing in the name of the song.
“I’ll listen to it and tell you how to start,” he spoke up again, beaming. “We can get you back on the stage in no time!”
“I-- I never actually played in a band or anything,” you stuttered, embarrassment creeping over the back of your neck. “. . . I just played for fun.”
“That’s cool, too!” Steven assured you, his smile never faltering from his face. “Don’t worry about it, (Y/N).”
Nodding, you smiled back and listened to the song with him, Garnet thumping her foot on the floor in rhythm with the song you chose. Before you could process what was happening, she stood up from her seat on the front passenger seat, her body taken over by light as she began to separate herself into two smaller bodies. They revealed themselves as a bright red Gem with athletic wear and a blue one in a dress.
“Woah,” you mumbled, unable to break your eyes away from her -- them. “Is this what you guys call ‘fusion’?”
You directed your words at the rest of the group, not wanting to interrupt the red and blue pair dancing to the song that continued to play on Steven’s phone. Pearl glanced a quick look your way, a hint of a smile crossing her face.
“Yes,” she replied, focusing her eyes on the road again. “Garnet is the combination of a Ruby and a Sapphire.”
Still taken aback by the sight of the two dancing together, you thanked Pearl for her response and watched the pair silently until the song came to an end. Bright, joyous smiles were present on both their faces as they struck their final pose, breathless after the dance they performed. Once they regained composure, the one in the dress turned to you, a smile still showing on her blue features. She approached your side, her hands clasped together as she looked up at you.
“It’s nice to finally meet you, (Y/N),” she spoke, her smile widening when seeing you return it. “I’m Sapphire, and this is my partner -- Ruby.”
