Steven disappears behind the kitchen while Garnet and Pearl set up the table. Now on your own, the only unoccupied Gem around approaches you, hanging an arm around your shoulders. You almost can’t look down at her with how close she is, and you’re certain you can feel your ears grow hotter the more you take in the reality of the situation.
“How’s it going?” she asks, playfulness present in her tone.
“I- I’m fine,” you reply, stuttering in your words. A sharp intake of air reaches your lungs the moment she lets go of you, relief reaching you in waves. You almost trample over your own feet when left alone again, and you have to muster up courage to make eye contact with her before saying anything else. “But. . . What is all this?”
“It’s a little something to celebrate our, uh. . . relationship,” she replies, a hint of embarrassment slipping from that last word. You almost smile at that observation, though you don’t comment on it, given the current status of your own nerves. “C’mon, (Y/N) -- Let’s go sit over there!”
You nod and follow her steps until arriving at the table the two other Gems had just finished setting up. Anxiety settles over you at the cliche, but nonetheless effective nature of candlelight between two people. It’s clear Pearl was the one who set up the plates and small set of cutlery, giving the proper order they were in -- a concept you vaguely remembered from your course on culinary arts. You assume Garnet was the one to come up with the idea in the first place, the thought of Amethyst coming up with something at such a level of intimacy refusing to surface over your mind, no matter how much you tried to visualize it.
A beat of awkward silence passes until she finally speaks up. “So, (Y/N). . . I’ve been wantin’ to say this for a while now, but. . . I have trouble saying it, even now.” You tilt your head down slightly and form a soft, amiable smile to let her know you were listening, encouraging her to keep on voicing her thoughts out loud. “The thing is. . . I like you, (Y/N) -- A lot.” She halts in her confession, taking the glass of water Garnet had set down for her. You catch a hint of her hand shaking, though she masks it by grinning, returning to her casual self. “Being with you those three days at that hotel made me realize that. I think you’re a pretty cool (lady/guy), and I’d like it if we could, uh. . . Try out what humans call ‘dating’.”
“That. . .” you mutter, at a loss for words. “I’d love to go out with you, Amy!” You stop yourself the second that nickname leaves your lips, mousiness making your gaze cast downwards. “Um. . . Is it okay if I call you that sometimes?”
The earlier awkwardness and tension from her confession fades away at your comment. The Gem snorts at that, her grin growing wider as she leans forward over the table and reaches out for your hand, squeezing it tightly in her own. “‘Course it is, you dork!” she comments, another chuckle leaving her mouth. “You see? This is why I like you so much, (Y/N)!”
Amethyst lets go of your hand and grabs hold of her cup of -- now lukewarm -- water again, taking another sip from it. She sets it back down, looking towards Garnet and Pearl, both who’d hidden on a far corner of the living room to allow her and you some privacy for your date. She nods at the two and the two nod back at her, the view making you suppress a grin.
“You’re one to talk,” you comment, wanting to tease her after witnessing that scenario. “You set up this whole date just to ask me out -- Not that I’m complaining.” You sent a wink her way after that and take hold of the water set in front of you. Carefully, you bring the liquid to your lips and drink half of its contents in one slow, steady go, throat dry with how much you’d worried over asking Amethyst out.
Neither one of you were in a place to call the other out on their ways.
