Katniss's POV

*

When you get scared, adrenaline fills you. You use most of that adrenaline to think up the worse scenarios your mind can ever imagine. The other little you don't use is to run. At first, your body reacts to the scenarios as the fright comes to you. Then you move to get away from or to it. As you move, you never pay attention, you get hurt, but the adrenaline does something to put the pain in the back of your mind, to worry about it later. When you move, you run from your nightmares, or to them; you run to the problem, or away from it. You never want to know what happened, or what is happening, but the adrenaline puts so many things to mind, you need to know what is happening, or happened. You won't stop moving until you reach the problem and find out what is reality.

As of now, I am running with adrenaline at my side. I search for the screams source, ruffling around in the demented jungle. I hear my name a few times behind me, but I run from it as soon as it is heard. My heart beat fills my ears, my whole body is beating as I breath heavily. Finally the screaming has become pitch in my ears.

"Katniss!"

"Prim! Where are you?" I scream back. I hear the flaps of wings, looking up, I see a bird. Not just a normal bird, no Mockingjay that copies the beautiful notes of songs, none other than a Jabberjay. I grab an arrow, place it right on the bow, and shot the bird down.

"Katniss! Katniss!" I hear Finnick scream. I turn to see him, out of breath as me. "Katniss! There you are! What was that?"

"Jabberjay." I say, poking at it with my arrow. "It's gone now."

"Good, lets get back with everyone." I nod. We start to walk back, when yet another bird comes down at me, nearly hitting my head, screaming Prim's voice again.

"Katniss!"

"No! Katniss, it's not real!" Finnick screams. He pulls me toward him, arms length. I calm down and let the bird scream it's mimicking voice of my sister. "It's not her! They don't have her!"

"Katniss! Katniss! Help me! Please!"

I can't take it anymore. I grab more arrows, shooting the damn birds down. Finnick has my back, waving his trident, killing the birds that come near him. They keep coming though. One minute, I feel Finnick's presence behind me, then he's gone.

"Finnick! Finnick!" I hear another girl scream. I turn around, seeing Finnick run towards the scream. "Annie! Annie! Where are you!" It is only one girl screaming, only one of Finnick's loved ones. So, he really does have a lover.

"Katniss!" Prim. I shoot the bird.

"Katniss!" My mother. Another arrow.

"Help me, Katniss!" Madge. Arrow.

"Katniss, please!" Gale. Knife.

"Katniss! Katniss!" Posy. Arrow.

"Katniss! Katniss! Katniss! Katniss!" Vick, Rory, Sae, Prim. Arrow, arrow, knife, empty.

"Shit."

I hear a crying from one of the birds, I start sobbing. Peeta's voice screaming my name is the loudest of them all. The memories of him at night with his own nightmares of losing me come to, how could they have gotten those? I need to get out. I run towards Finnick, out of arrows and knives now. I find him, pull him away from the birds screaming Finnick's name. Tears brim his eyes, but he stays strong, taking control. "Finnick! They aren't real! This isn't-"

"How do you know they don't have them locked up? How do you think they got those sounds? They can't just make them!" He's right, but Peeta's voice, how did they get that if he's here? I breath heavily until one bird comes rushing towards us. Finnick covers me, pulling me along as we run from them. The birds fly down at us, clipping our arms and legs. Blood runs down to my fingers and ankles.

I finally see Peeta, he's yelling something, but I can't hear him. His hands are up, his lips moving, Johanna and Beetee behind him, worried. I run faster to Peeta. Next thing I know, I hit something, Finnick and I are on the floor, birds flying low to us still. Peeta's kneeled down to look at us better. I can see the force field he leans on, pushes. It isn't really a force field, just a boarder. They can touch it, Johanna's ax and Peeta's knife won't deny it.

Peeta puts his hand on the barrier. I put my hand over his, we're in an hour. We are trapped here for an hour. I stare at Peeta, trying to keep my sanity. More and more come. One by one, taking up the voices they copy louder every time. Finnick finally gives up. He takes up the position on his knees, hands covering his ears. As if the noise is crushing his skull. He mumbles something under all the commotion.

"Katniss! Katniss, please help me! Please! Katniss! Katniss!"

I fall down besides Finnick on my knees, knowing Peeta isn't reachable at the time being. I scream. I cover my ears, closing my eyes, counting all the people I love who Snow could have.

.

"Katniss! Katniss!" I jump up, shaking in Peeta's arms. Peeta kisses my forehead, rubbing my back. "They're gone, they're gone."

"Come on, Finnick, lets go get some water." Johanna mumbles to Finnick. Beetee picks up one of the Jabberjays, examining it. Finnick sits up, groggy. He stares between the air, thinking possibly about his love. I look around in horror. I keep my arms around Peeta long enough until he is carrying me like a child. My ear rests above his heart, calming me. Peeta mumbles soothing words in my ear, rocking me back and forth. I began to relax, but that's when I tremble.

"It's all right, Katniss." He whispers.

"You didn't hear them."

"I heard Prim's. Right in the beginning. But it wasn't her, it was just the Jabberjay."

"It was her, somewhere. The Jabberjay recorded it." I say.

"That's what they want you to think. The same way as last year, with the mutts eyes. Like Glimmer's, I thought they were, but they weren't her eyes. It was not Prim's voice, and if it was, they took it from an interview or something and disordered it. Made it sound realistic enough to hurt you." Peeta states.

"No, they were hurting her." I answer. "She probably dead."

"Katniss, Prim isn't dead." Surprisingly, Johanna says this. She kneels down to see me. "The Capitol is in love with your little sister, they'd go ballistic if anything happened to her. We're almost at the final eight, what happens then?"

Hopelessly, I say. "Seven more of us die."

"No, I meant back home."

I sigh. "At the final eight?" I know she's trying to help me, in someway, I mean, this is Johanna who's talking. She hates me. "They interview your family and friends back home."

"That's right." She says. "They interview your family and friends, could they do that if they've killed them all?"

"No?" I ask, still unsure.

"No. That's how we know Prim's alive, sweetie. She'll be the first one they interview, won't she?" Peeta says.

I'm trying to believe him. Badly. Just... the voices...

"First, Prim. Then your mother, your cousins, Gale. Madge. It's a trick, a horrible one, Katniss. They can't hurt them, we are the only ones they can hurt. We're in the Games, not them."

"You believe that?" I ask, rather stubbornly.

"I really do." Peeta whispers.
