Prim's POV
Once my mother and Katniss leave to the doctor's, I have no idea what to do to waste time until they return. Should I clean? Cook? Read? I have about a thousand options. What do I do first? What do I really want to do with my spare time alone?
I have finished my week’s homework, it has always been easy now that I am more grown up, wiser than my child self. The house is pretty clean, my mother has more free time than I do, and I would need to go to town to get the supplies to cook later with my mother. But that is later and I need to do something now.
I go to the big office Katniss loves to sit in and pick a book from one of the many shelves aligning the walls. I should get Katniss to read some. She does nothing all day but slouch around like Buttercup, although they hate each other in a loving, friendly way, or be with Peeta and still does nothing.
I sit on the couch in the living room and open to the first page. I read on and on about a girl and her pet dog living in a too perfect world for I don’t know how long before I get too entirely bored and go back to the office to pick another one.
I am interrupted from reading the new book I choose by the doorbell ringing. I get up and see Peeta through the window, waiting in the cold for someone to open.
I quickly open the door for him and allow him inside.
"Is Katniss here?" he asks first thing. He takes off his coat and hangs it up, I shake my head.
"She and my mother went to the doc... I mean the store. We needed more supplies to bake for tomorrow,” I lied. He nodded and waited for me to say something. Peeta is so predictable and sweet, I could see how he got Katniss to fall in love with him. He could break anyone, in a good or bad way. For Katniss though, it is in a good way.
"You can stay and wait if you'd like. I'm sure they will be back in a little," I say. He smiled and nods. I start walking and Peeta follows me into the office. He sat down in front of me as I continue to read my book, he has a paper on the desk, and a pencil in his hand.
I am distracted from my book by the fine lines Peeta makes on the paper, transforming it from a blank sheet to one filled with dark and light grays. He smoothens the picture out, taking off excess pencil lead, but I am too far back to see what he is drawn in such little time. I notice his tongue sticking out of his lips when he draws, which I find adorable. God only knows how much Katniss loves him.
I am about to stand and glance at this fascinating drawing when the front door busts open and I hear footsteps running upstairs. Peeta and I rush out and see my mother jogging inside, slamming the door shut behind her.
"What's wrong?" I ask.
"I will tell you later."
"Okay, but why is Katniss mad?" I ask. The door upstairs slams close and I flinch.
"Because... Peeta, you should go up and talk to her. Get some sense into her head,” suggests my mother. He nods and heads upstairs to my sisters room.
"Mom,” I whisper, "What's really wrong?"
She sighs. She doesn't speak until Peeta was let into Katniss's room, which took Peeta some convincing and lots of knocking. My mother dragged me into the office and sat me down. She rubbed her temple and sat across from me.
"Katniss isn't sick, Prim."
"Oh, thank God!" I say relieved. My hand lays on my chest as my heart goes back to its normal pace.
"She's pregnant,” she says in such a calm tone, I’d expect her to be enraged by now, it seems like Katniss took that one by hand. Her too calm expression shows me Katniss and herself are not too happy about this, but more worried.
"What!” I scream. My mother shushes me and I quiet down.
"She's angry because I would not make peace with my parents. She said she would not speak to me until I did. And I can't,” she admits weakly.
"Why can't you? Katniss forgave you! And you did something much worse than what your parents did!" I said.
"I know Prim. I'll try. But, let's not worry Katniss more. She has to tell Peeta and then go through with the pregnancy. It's a bit of pressure for someone her age. Just, let her calm down and get used to what's going to happen." I nod and let my mother leave me be. I sit on the chair Peeta was on and see his drawing. It is Katniss in the meadow with flowers in her hair. She is looking away to the trees, her hair is down and being pushed around by the wind. She was smiling brightly.
It is rare for her to smile outside of the woods. I wish it wasn't anymore.
