Rose and I took off following them across the roofs, there was an awkward silence surrounding us. Rose and I just kept on looking at each other trying to hold in our laughs because of the silence, you could tell that Nicol girl was pissed at Wen for inviting us to come along.
I decided to try and get to know them because we would be seeing a lot of them. “Have you guys got any family?” I asked out of curiosity because Rose and I only had each other. Nicol seemed to freeze on the spot; Wen walked up to her and rubbed her back, trying to comfort her. But Nicol just hit her hand away and carried on walking ahead, ignoring us. “Don’t mind her, she’s just upset.” Wen said and carried on walking; I sped up a little and walked beside her. “What about you?” I asked. She sighed and then looked at me and smiled, “as a child I used to have a family that cared for me, a family that showed me love.” I could see she was re living the memory as she was telling me her story.
“But one night mum and dad were arguing which almost never happened and I wondered what it was about. My curiosity got the best of me and I snuck out into the hallway and listened to them argue, my heart skipped a beat as I went into complete shock when I heard them say stuff about a sister I had never heard of, I just wanted to know who she was. But unfortunately on that same night I was told to find a safe place and hide as my mum and dad looked into my eyes and said their unspoken words ‘we love you baby’.” A single tear ran down her face as she continued. “I quickly rushed and chose my hiding spot which was under my parent’s bed, it was a big mistake and I heard the loud shouting and a bang. My heart completely stopped as my mother’s lifeless body hit the floor. I looked her in the eye, watching the life drain from her as a single tear fell down her face.” Wen now looked as if she was going to break down and cry, I could see the internal battle she was having with herself trying to tell her to be strong. I pulled her into a hug, trying to comfort her. It felt weird because I didn’t know her too well, but this story was obviously before the apocalypse started. Her whole life, she had grown up without parents.
She pulled out from the hug and continued to walk. “I still remember that night like it was yesterday. I had my childhood stolen from me that night as I vowed to get revenge against my parent’s killers. I was left, with no one to take care of me and nowhere to go. I took shelter in an abandoned building at the age of 5, the same night my parents were murdered. Ever since that day I have trained myself to be the perfect killer to get revenge.” My jaw dropped, since she was 5! “The day had come, I planned that day a year ago, I was going to kill them that night. I grabbed my jacket, my few belongings that I had collected over the years and my axe. My favourite choice of weapon to use, I had trained with the axe all my life because it was the only weapon I could find when I took cover in the building.” I couldn’t help but smile about the axe being her favourite weapon; she was really talented with it.
“I turned and faced the building that had been my home for the past 15 years, I prepared never to return. Hiding any evidence that I had been there and remembered the first time I went to that building, as a hopeless child with a dream to become a killer. Which I was.” She smiled at that, showing she was proud of what she became and that she was going to get revenge for her parent’s deaths. “But my dream was not fulfilled that night because that night, was the beginning of the apocalypse.” She finished her story and just carried on walking. I didn’t know what to say, I was completely shocked!
“wow.” Was all I said to her as we carried on walking, I looked behind me at Rose and saw her crying? She must be in shock of what Wen had said as well, probably thinking back to her own family as well. Wen looked at me and gave me a small smile, “so now you know my story, what’s yours?” she asked. Mine wasn’t half as bad as hers; I grew up with my family and had a nice life while she was on the streets. “I lost my parents a little before the apocalypse; they were scientists trying to find the cure for cancer. Their lab was actually the place the infection started. I haven’t seen them since their lab went into lock down. I guess their dead.” I said not wanting to think about their lifeless bodies walking around as zombies in their lab. “oh.” Was all she said, “Yeah.” I replied.
“So your 20?” I asked, “yeah, 21 in a month. How old are you guys, by the looks of what you’re wearing. You’re still in high school.” Wen looked at me and Rose waiting for a reply. “I’m 15 and Rose is 16” just then I realised that we hadn’t actually told them our names. Oh my god! How rude. She smiled, “I guess your friend is Rose, now what’s your name?” I was so embarrassed that Rose and I knew their names and they didn’t know ours. “I’m Melody.” I said holding my hand out; she took my hand for the second time and shook it. “Well it’s nice to finally know your names.” I smiled at her response.
“Will you guys shut up! I don’t want to know your life story!” Nicol said to mainly me. “Don’t be so rude Nicol; we have all lost someone, not just you!” Wen shouted back at her, shutting her up. Wen then looked at Rose, “what about your family?” she asked. I watched as Rose’s face scrunched up trying to hold back tears as she thought about her parents and brothers being dead. “I don’t know whether they are dead or alive, where they are or aren’t.” she said, starting to sob. I walked over to her and started hugging her, understanding some of the pain she is going through. Especially as she will turn soon. “I’m sorry Rose I didn’t want to upset you. It’s just everyone was telling their stories and I was curious, please forgive me.” I was shocked at what she said; I wasn’t expecting her to go full out apologetic to her. “it’s fine.” Rose managed to say to her before placing her head on my shoulder and crying more. Ok, time for mean Melody to come out. I whispered in her ear, “Come on Rose! You are stronger than this; you don’t need your parents to live! You have me and I’m going to do everything I can to protect you.” I know she needed her parents, just as I needed mine but now is not the time to morn for lost loved ones.
Rose nodded against my shoulder, sniffed and then carried on walking. I wondered if Nicol was going to tell us what happened to her and her family, because it was easy to tell that this topic was bothering her.
