Sometimes love isn't forever (Edited)

I continued making small talk with Wen for the next hour or so of walking to their base, I got to know her a lot more and found out that we like a lot of the same things and were becoming good friends quickly. I was glad that me and Rose found Wen and Nicol when we did because not only did they save our lives but we now have a safe place to go with other survivors there.

Nicol continued to be very quiet while we were walking but did join in to a few of our conversations, this made me happy. I know that she has been really rude to me and rose but I knew that she obviously had a reason for it, I remember Wen mentioning about her losing someone but then again, we have all lost people. But I guess some people just can't handle it that well. I really wanted to see what was bugging Nicol that much that she wouldn't talk to me and rose, so I walked ahead of Wen leaving her to chat with Rose. "I'm sorry." I apologised to her, I thought that maybe that would help her understand that I didn't mean to be rude and that I'm here for her if she needs anything.

She seemed to be having an internal battle with herself, whether she should talk to me or not. So I just walked besides her, waiting for a response. It felt like forever but it was only about 10 minutes, Nicol looked at me and smiled. I smiled back, hoping that she was going to accept my apology. "I don't know why you are apologising. I'm the one that has done nothing but be rude to you." She confessed. "Well I was kind of rude to you as well." I said to her, trying to show her I didn't mean to be rude. She smiled, "A lot of things happened to me, which caused my heart to be broken and my world to be crushed. I haven't had a proper conversation with anyone for ages; I shut myself down and refused to talk. I didn't want anyone close to me, but I see now that you are just trying to be friendly." I smiled at her, showing I understood. "I'd like to start over." I was shocked, I didn't know what to say, I was just happy that I had one less enemy. "I'd like that too." I smiled and held out my hand. "My name is Melody and my friend is Rose." She shook my hand and looked back at Rose and half smiled at her. "I know your names; I heard your conversation with Wen. But thanks for introducing yourself to me."

We walked a little more in silence as I smiled to myself that I had gotten through to Nicol. Nicol looked at me and had a confused face, "I don't know what it is but I feel like I can trust you and I don't even know you too well." I was shocked, I did make friends really well at school and people just naturally liked me but trust me, that has to be earned. "if you trust me that much can I know what happen, I want to help you, show you that I just want to be friends." I know that was a little straight forward but I was going to prove a point, that if she really felt like she trusted me then she would tell me what happened to her. She smiled and looked at me; she looked me in the eye as if she was searching me for something. She sighed; "I really enjoyed my life it felt so magical, i never wanted the perfection to end because i had that amazing feeling of having that special someone you love. This person meant the world to me, she was the love of my life, and her name was Maddie." She smiled; I presume remembering what she looked like.

"I finished college and was so excited because it was Maddie's birthday the next day, she would be 20. She was 2 years older than me but it didn't matter, my feelings never changed. I was going to give her a sweet surprise!" Nicol looked down at her wrist at the bracelet that was there, it was so beautiful. Nicole's sweet surprise would remain on her wrist forever... it was a heart shaped charm bracelet, it has little bones around it and in the middle of it says on one side 'forever and always' and on the other 'I love you to death'.

"But i was unable to do that, because it was the same day that the apocalypse started. We were surviving well because of my knowledge of fighting and speciality of knife throwing. I promised myself i would risk everything and do anything for her to live! But i did not fulfil my promise the night i let my guard down." I realised that this was only the other day, she lost the love of her life a few days ago!

She looked down, "The zombie came out of nowhere and i was a little preoccupied with Maddie to notice it coming. And that was the night my beloved died, not only was she bitten but i was the one to end her life with a knife to her head. Breaking the promise on her birthday..." my jaw it the floor, her birthday! Wow, Nicol had it bad. She lost everyone that meant something to her. "That was the day i vowed never to speak of love and i built up the mental wall around me because i was never going to feel the pain of losing the love of my life ever again!" I hugged her the same way I hugged Wen when she told me what happened to her. Now I understand why she was rude, she didn't want to let anyone in, not let anyone get close. Not even friends because she got into her head that they could die at any moment leaving her to mourn for another lost loved one. "It's okay Nicol, I'm sorry I wouldn't of asked if I knew it was this bad. But don't worry; I will be here for you if you need me, as a friend." I smiled at her and she smiled back, I was glad that she had opened up to me, I could now trust her and she could now trust me.
