So Rose is a zombie ... what will Melody do now?

My world stopped spinning. I couldn't breathe. Tears escaped my eyes as everything moved in slow motion. I saw both Wen and Nicol shouting but I heard nothing, everything was silent. I stood still as everything moved around me. I didn't move as I was pushed to the ground, with a heavy weight on top of me. I looked up at the figure, I sighed. I knew I had to do something but I couldn't move a muscle. I stared at the zombie that was once Rose, the only thing I recognised was her hair, still placed in a messy bun on top of her head. She growled and brought her head to my shoulder, I let out a mind blowing painful scream as the realisation hit me. She, IT had bitten me! And took a large chunk of flesh with it. I brought my hand up to my shoulder to stop the bleeding. I crawled backwards as Rose was pulled off me, I watched as Nicol went to send a knife at Rose.

Before I knew what I was doing, I was already standing in front of Rose as Nicol's knife was hurled towards me. The knife landed in my arm as I screamed. Forgetting Rose was a zombie, I had protected her! Wrong move! Pain shot through my shoulder as it was being bitten again. I slung the figure forward and over my head.

So many memories of mine and Rose's childhood and friendship passed through my mind as I stood in front of her. I looked at my arm and grabbed the handle of the knife and pulled it out of my arm, I bit my lip to stop my pain filled cry from escaping. Rose came running towards me for the second time, teeth bared and claws out. It's now or never! A tear escaped my already wet eyes as I used the knife that I had pulled from my arm and drove it into her neck. I screamed in horror of what I had just done as she let out her own deformed cry.

She fell to the floor at the same time I did. I looked into her dead eyes and I knew she was in a better place because I had fulfilled the promise to end her suffering and kill her. I wiped my nose with the sleeve of my jacket and stood up, ignoring everything around me.

I picked up my machete off the ground and put it back into its holder. "Let's jump!" I said more to myself, but anyone that heard came and stood by me. I shot the window with my hand gun and watched it shatter into pieces, allowing a huge gush of wind to fly in. I looked left and saw Nicol; she gave me an apologetic look, probably for hitting me with the knife. Then I looked to my right and saw Wen, she smiled in encouragement so I went for it!

I took a deep breath, cleared my mind and ran as fast as my legs would take me. And jumped. I was terrified! This jump was no jump! It was a bloody leap! I looked around me in a panic as I flew through the air in slow motion, I saw others around me and they looked just as panicked, I hit the building's roof and rolled to absorb the impact. I couple thuds later most of the group were across and safe, I looked around and counted 8 of us. Not bad, considering the amount of zombies we just faced. I sat up and looked at my arm, ouch! Goodbye t-shirt, I ripped off some of the material from my shirt and wrapped it around my arm. The pain reminded me of how Rose bit me; I looked down at my lap and started crying my eyes out.

I felt someone's hand touch my back and I looked up, I saw Wen standing there with tears in her own eyes. I was confused, why was she crying? She held her hand out and I took it, she pulled me up but didn't let my hand go. I didn't question it and followed her to the edge of the building; she knelt down on the ground and looked down. I copied her and looked over the edge. I screamed and fell into Wen's arms, not another person. We sat there like that for a while; this was not a good day. "We were running behind you and just as we were jumping a zombie jumped and grabbed her. I was already in the air so there was nothing I could do." Wen explained. I looked over the edge again, what I saw was not nice. Stuck in the fence that surrounded the building was a zombie, that's not what had me upset. On top of that zombie was Nicol, with one of the metal bars that sit on top of the fence through her chest. Her body lay facing up towards the sky as if she was admiring it; at least she saw something nice before her death.

"Wen." I looked up at her waiting for her response. "Yeah?" she asked, in reply I pulled down the side of my t-shirt revealing the ugly bite marks Rose gave me. I looked at my lap trying to avoid Wen's stare. "Oh my gosh Melody, are you okay?" she half screamed at me. She reached into the little pouch that sat on her hip and pulled out a bandage. "Never go anywhere without it." She said to me as if answering the silent question that I had in my head. Wen helped me out of my t-shirt so she could secure the bandage around my shoulder properly. "What am I going to do Wen, I want to find out if my parents are alive, continue with my life! Rose is dead and now Nicol is too! I'm losing everyone close to me and I'm going to end up killing you if you let me live!" I broke down in tears once again. Wen slapped me! I held my face as I looked up at her, "Sorry Melody but don't you see, you have us." She gestured to everyone that was sitting on the roof. I was about to argue but before I could say anything she cut me off and carried on with what she was saying. "I know you don't talk to half of these people, Heck! I bet you don't even remember their names. But you still have me, I'm still alive! No bites, no major injuries and I now have nowhere to go and with no one to go with. Nicol was the first friend I had since my child hood and then you and Rose came along, I was so happy that we were all friends. You're not the only one losing people!" she fell to her knees and tears escaped her eyes. "I don't want to lose you Melody; I will follow you to find your parents. Whatever you want, just don't leave me with these people!" she screamed at me, I was shocked, she was taking this really bad too. I'm glad the others couldn't hear our conversation because I think they would be a little offended by her outburst.

Well I wasn't finished because I couldn't harm her, I didn't want this fate! "Don't you see Wen! I'm bitten! I will turn and possibly hurt you and others, I should just get this over with and die!" I screamed as I stood up and stepped onto the edge of the building, ready to throw myself off. She looked up at me with pure pain written all over her face, "No! If Rose managed to stay alive for about a week and a half then you can survive longer! You are stronger than her! You were always the leader and she was the follower!" she grabbed my wrist and pulled me away from the edge of the building.

I was glad she did that because I really didn't want to die! I sighed and gave up. "Fine! Come with me; help me find out if my parents are still alive. But you have to keep the same promised that I had with Rose, when the time comes you kill me!" I shouted, all the feelings that I had kept bundled up all this time were exploding inside me! Wen let out a huff of breath, relived that I was going to stay. "Thank you Melody! I will, I promise, no one should have to suffer like that. But one thing, we have to leave." She whispered the last part to me so no one could hear. I knew why she was whispering because without us, this group had no hope in surviving. I mean they did have Keith but by the look of him, he was going to die soon. "I know, tonight! We leave tonight!" I said walking back over to the group.

I helped people out by using items of clothing to stop the bleeding of other people's wounds, whereas others there was nothing I could do. Some were bitten and were being ignored by the others, who weren't infected, other with broken bones from landing wrong. There were about 3 people that were healthy to carry on in the group, excluding me and Wen. By the time everyone was treated the best we could manage we made camp, which included of various things that people managed to pick up or had in bags that they carried. We had enough blankets for 2 people to share so I paired with Wen, we settled down a little away from the group so they couldn't hear our plan to leave them behind.
