she glances over at him
a question, hope, still lingers
he shakes his head, no
she chokes back tears
and strides out the door
in the opposite direction
with her nose higher in the air
than she meant for it to be
bile rises in her throat
anger clouds her vision
along with the tears she
refuses to let survive
clenches her teeth
one foot in front of the other
one accusation after another
one stair and then another
keep going, she tells herself
be brave, be strong, be regal
you don't have to care, her
mind screams. yes you do,
her heart whispers quietly.
she breaks for the bathroom
slides down to the ground
buries her head in her knees
he didn't even have the decency
to say he didn't care
she wasn't worth enough to him
to draw out a single word
gets back up
splashes water on her cheeks
and continues as though
she's never known a single sorrow
and yet one too many
cold, regal, elegant, don't feel,
her mind reminds her.
sweet, kind, funny, endearing,
her heart begs her.
she shoves her heart into her shoes
and walks away
as though her heart
never existed in the first place.
