Chapter 16: Stinging Sand
(Sunday Morning)
Alex texts me.
Alex: Levin?
Me: Yes Alex?
Alex: Will you still go to the beach with me? I'm really sorry.
Me: I thought you hated me...but yes, Alex.
Alex: I don't hate you when did you come up with that!
Me: When you yelled at me...
Alex: Yeah, I was mad! But, I'm over it. I just want to be friends. Okay?
Me: okay. promise?
Alex: I promise
Me: Okay, I'm sorry about the Josh thing. Its just he was there for me.
Alex: Its okay. Really, I'm over it. I just want to be friends.
Me: Oh well I'll see you there in an hour Alex.

I arrive at the beach in a blue Hollister top and pink shorts, with my green bikini under my clothes. Alex comes over to me with two beach towels, an umbrella, and a cooler.
"Pick a spot" he says.
We end up a few steps away from the sinking tide. He has set up the umbrella over us, positioned the two swim towels, and has opened the cooler.
"Wanna drink?" he asks as he pulls out a Capri Sun.
"Yeah." I say accepting it.
For a moment we just sit there, watching the waves crash on the shore. The silence feels good. It's something I haven't felt in a while.
"So um how's life Alex?"
"Its okay."
"How are you recovering from your coma?" I ask.
"Okay. Every week I have to have 3 weeks worth of makeup work. And I have so many tests its a wonder I'm still here at all. The doctors are always sticking needles in me, ugh its terrible! But seriously, I'm fine!"
"Well. Okay." I say.
Then the silence comes back. Ever since his coma and our fight, we haven't had anything to talk about.
"So, Levin." He breaks the silence "How about that airline food?" he asks
"Um. There airline food always tastes bad." I say realizing its a joke "But I remember on my way to the academy I had to take an airplane. I almost puked from all the nervousness. And when I got here, I kept bumping into things and people. Im a true mess." I say to break the tension.
"Really?! Thats why that joke is so commonly used. I thought they did serve good food."
"Well only if you count gum and peanuts as food!"
We both laugh for a little bit. After that, talk comes easier to us. We talk about nothing in particular. Video games, shopping, our hometowns. It turns out he comes from New York. He came down here because his mom got divorced. Apparently he doesn't like his mom.
"Really? My dad got divorced too. He got a really good paying job and moved to Florida to get away from my mom. But she passed away last year."
"Oh. So.... Wanna go into the water?" he asks comfortably.
We run into the big blue sea, splashing water everywhere. For a while we swam around together happily. Man, how much I missed him.
"Hey Levin! I found a whole sand dollar! Lets look for more!" Alex shouts gleefully.
"Okay." I reply. We both swim away from each other. I feel something brush against my leg and pull it up. Then I feel the worst stinging sensation. I hear my name being shouted. I feel a sharp pointed thing disengage itself from my leg. I feel myself being picked up and the wind across my body. Then I black out.
To be continued...
