Chapter 17: ER

I wake up in an emergency room. The sterile white walls seem very ominous to me. Then I see Alex right beside me in a plush leather chair.

"Ow. That hurt." I say, groggily.

"Oh, thank goodness! You're awake!" Alex says relieved

"Ow. How long was I out.?" I ask

"A day. I asked if I could come here and catch up on school work until you woke up. All the teachers agreed. Apparently, its some kind of code to let someone who was just in a coma get whatever they wanted." he says, then chuckles.

"Well Im glad they let you come."

"And I'm just glad you're awake. So guess what? You got attacked by a stingray. You did nothing wrong. That stingray wasn't even supposed to be there. It was supposed to be up in the Atlantic. Its nest was miles away from here, it was tagged, and you were shuffling your feet so it would know you were here. So nobody can blame you. But, you need to stay here for a week. The toxins are still in your blood. You should sleep" he says hurriedly.

The moment he says those words, I realise how sleepy I am.

I manage to say something to him before I go under though.

"I'm sorry." I catch his look of surprise as I drift back into the land of slumber.

When I wake up, Alex is asleep on the chair and Josh, Isabelle, and Destin stand by the door.

"Ow. Um. Hellooo? My leg REALLY hurts." I say loudly.

The look of surprise on their faces are clear. The man they were gathered around comes over to me. The doctor.

"Levin." He says in a soothing tone. "You were speared in the leg by a stingray. You did nothing wrong at all. In fact, you were a model swimmer. But, your leg. It was completely speared through. And the stinger was exceptionally big. It will take a month to heal. You can stay here for about 4 more days because you have a lot of toxins still in your blood and then you can be on full recovery at home or school for the rest of the month. EIther way, you'll be on painkillers for another week. You can choose. But, you will be in a wheel chair.

"What? How long was I out? I'm so confused." I ask innocently.

"You were out for 3 days since the incident. Mr. Alexander here has not left your side. The other three just arrived an hour ago. Its okay you're safe here." he says

"Okay, I think I want to stay at school for my recovery. Can I see my visitors now?" I ask.

"Yes, Ms. Levin. And it might be longer than a month. Three months, max. Sorry." he says and then hurries away.

"Levin! Oh my gosh! I am so sorry! Do you feel okay? What do you remember about it? I am so sorry! They say that only 1 in 1,000 live through a sting ray attack." Isabel babbles.

"Well, first off, its okay. Second of all, I feel tired and I can't think straight. Second of all, I remember absolutely everything about it..." I say and look at Josh "But I'll uh have to tell you later. Can I talk to Josh alone?"

Everyone leaves except Alex, who's still asleep in a chair, and Josh, who sits beside me and holds my hand.

"Are you okay?"

"Yes"

"Well, what happened. As your boyfriend I deserve to know" he declares

"So, Alex and I went into the water and were playing around. Then he found a sand dollar. He tells me to look for more and I agree. I start going away from him, and shuffle my feet. Then I feel something slippery brush against my leg. I feel a bunch of needle-like pins piercing my leg and I look down. Then I feel something beyond pain. It felt so bad, I can't even begin to describe it. I feel a long tube coming out of my leg and something swimming off. Everything after that is kind of hazy. I hear Alex calling my name, and I feel his hands lifting me up. Then I blacked out. I woke up a couple days ago here, and Alex told me I was pierced by a stingray. Then I blacked out again." I recount.

"Alex. Alex. Alex." Josh says annoyed.

"You did ask what happened." I remind him.

"Yeah, well. This wouldn't have happened if you had stayed away from him. I promised you he would never hurt you again and you promised you would never leave again!" Josh yells.

"Its okay. Its okay. He didn't do anything wrong."

"Yes, he did. He didn't stay away from you."

"Let's talk about his later Josh." I say, as I see a nurse put something in an I. V. tube.

"No, lets talk about this now!" He says stubbornly.

"I can't. I need to sleep." I say hazily.

"Well we're talking tomorrow. And I mean it!"

"I feel like it we-...." and I don't get to finish that thought because I fall into a deep sleep.
