Megan's POV
*flash forward 5 years*
Five years after the murder of Drew, a partner and true friend of Abbie and I, We continued on our mission to avenge him. Abbie and I opened our own private investigation company to continue the hunt for the killer when the New York police closed the case.
Most private investigators are hired for many secret jobs, and things like that, but we hardly even had a card. If you knew about us, it was either planned beforehand and we saw how this person could help the case, or it was a fluke and was immediately justified with a bribe, which has never happened. We perfected keeping quiet with our company, and the only members we needed were ourselves since this case is more personal and needed true professionals.
The times have gotten harder for us, later nights at the Espresso Bean, contemplating our next move. This murderer was quick to the punch and a genius to leave no evidence.
The real question is why?
I've known Drew for what feels like forever, and he had a squeaky clean record for the most part. There must be more to this.
"Abbie wake up." I slap her forehead and she jolted awake from my couch.
"Who, what, where!" she yelled.
"That's what I'm trying to figure out."
I snorted.
"Motive?"
Abbie pondered this for a moment as the cloud of sleepiness fades away.
She snapped her fingers, "He's a cop like us maybe he busted someone and they didn't take it too lightly?"
"He's never taken a case without us and we've never had a case that didn't end up smoothly." I respond with the shake of my head.
With a flip of her hair Abbie grins at me ," We are pretty good aren't we?"
"Yep."
We both jump to the sound of my work phone ringing.
A.K.A. The "private" work phone and we had no one set up for the case this week. We call them, not the other way around.
I am completely puzzled at who this person may be and how they got my number.
"Hello?"
"You're working the case for the murder of Drew Powell correct?I've got the info you need and I'll send out a man with the information I have and money to pay. Meet him at three at The Espresso Bean. Got it?" the voice was scratchy and sounded like the person smoked fifty packs per day.
"Yes I'm working the case and yes I've Got it. Do I dare ask how you got this number?"
The douchebag hung up.
"Who was that?" Abbie questioned slowly, clearly just as freaked as I was that someone had our number.
"Someone has a tip on the murder, we have to meet his "henchman" at three in the afternoon at Espresso Bean." I explained.
I glance at my watch and realize it already was 2 in the morning.
"Jesus Abbie we need some sleep if we're gonna meet this guy. Get out, go home." I practically shove her out the door, I needed to think.
"Gosh woman I'm gone okay?" She slams the door behind her.
It's going to be a long night.
**********
"He's late." Abbie complains, and I check my watch for the umpteenth time.
I roll my eyes," Its only 3:02." We sit drinking our coffee when I feel a tap on my shoulder.
"About time." I start to say,but got cut off greeting the familiar green eyes I once saw years ago.
"You- you're the guy who bought me coffee." I said more as a question than a statement.
He shoots me the same dazzling smile as before, and brings out a hand for me to shake.
"The name's Jake."
