Megan's POV
"Abigail, did anyone ever tell you, you're pretty." I almost laugh aloud at Harold's shameless flirting. Respect for the effort though. I look up and see Jake staring back at me with a smirk and amusement in his eyes.
How does anyone get that shade of green eyes?
"Well genetics played a large part of it but I'm glad my eye color interests you."
I gasp. Did he read my mind?
"I said that aloud didn't I?" I sheepishly grin. Abbie covers her mouth with her hand to control her laughter and my embarrassment grows.
"Yes you did, but trust me it was cute." He winks and held my hand.
Oh my god he's holding my hand.
For the rest of the night he held my hand. It made it difficult to cut the steak in front of me, but there was no way I was going to let him go.
The rest of the night was talking about ourselves and laughing at Abbie and Harold's awkward conversations.
Before I know it the date is over.
Abbie of course needs me to give her a ride home so we both hop back into my mustang and we say our goodbyes to our dates.
"Remind me to NEVER let you set me up ever again case or not." Abbie says and slaps my arm.
I place my hand over my heart and mock hurt in my voice as I reply, "Why do you say that? I truly thought you and Harold seriously hit it off?" That comment earns me another slap on my arm, and after dropping Abbie off at her place and talking a bit, I head back to my own place.
I walk towards my door to find it was already swung open and by that I mean laying on the ground with the hinges still attached. I turn on the light to see All of my work papers were thrown everywhere or torn to shreds. My couch had been flipped over and cut into two pieces next to my smashed lamp. My only window overlooking the city was broken into a million shiny pieces flashing a light rainbow over the trashed apartment. The refrigerator door was hanging by the hinges and completely raided along with my emergency money missing.
Tears spring to my already glassy eyes as I see a single phrase spray painted over the wall above my bed.
There's room for two in his coffin.
It was painted in red. Blood red.
I know whose coffin the intruder meant and I crumble to the ground, unsure of my next move so I call the two people I knew I could trust at the moment,
Abbie and Jake.
*****
Jake arrived first and had one arm around my shoulder as I cried.
"Oh my god, Megan what happened?" Abbie burst through the door. "I had to take a taxi because of my car, and I was so worried. Oh jeez, I'm rambling are you okay?" she glances at me and Jake.
"No I'm not. EVERYTHING is destroyed and look." I point to the message above my bed.
Jake lets out a low whistle and says, "That sounds like a threat."
Abbie rolls her eyes, "No shit Sherlock. Have you called the police?" She turns to me.
"No, I mean we ARE the police I don't know what to do. Any wrong moves could get us killed." I rub my eyes and look down to see eye makeup all over it. I stand up and look at my dress covered in tear stains and my eyes were covered in a smear of brown and black.
I sigh and turn to my closet for pajamas to find my clothes in shreds. I want to cry out again, but I'm tough. I don't need to show this person anymore weakness than he/she has already gotten.
Then the unthinkable happens and I groan.
The private work phone rings again.
