Out of choices, out of time

Megan's POV

Abbie and I rush to the crime scene and I notice the chief shaking his head as he talks to Harold.

"Chief! We heard what happened." we run up to him and I get ready to ask a whole list of questions.

"Girls girls. There is nothing to report, it's the same set up, no witnesses, no murder weapon, anything. I shouldn't even tell you this since you don't work for me anymore." He's growing more and more frustrated and I can tell when he picks up yet another cigar without even finishing the first one.

"Chief, just please let us check the scene and see if it's our killer." Abbie begged and he nods his head in sympathy.

We pass through the tape and see the poor man lying there in his blood surrounded by empty bottles.

I let out a low whistle. "Think it's our guy?" I ask Abbie and she lets out a slow nod.

Suddenly Abbie perks her head up.

"Do you smell that Megan?"

"It's New York, all I smell is pastries and taxi fumes."

"No, it's perfume, and it's coming from the body."

"I'm sure it was just some other lady's perfume." I argue with Abbie as we walk up to the station.

"Megan. Trust me, I know it was from the body and It was freaking strong, I think the killer could be a girl."

I start to continue arguing with her theory but we reach the chief's door and he quickly ushers us in.

"Girls. I know it's been years, but I NEED you on this case. Can I trust you?" he seems panicked, and it shocks us both.

"Of course chief. Whatever you need." Abbie quickly responds and I nod in agreement.

"Good here are some files on the case." He hands me a huge unorganized pile of papers.

"Please thoroughly go through these files." his voice had so much desperation laced through it and that's when I realize how tired he is. The bags under his eyes have bulged and his gray hair has seemed to have gotten grayer. He at one point had laugh lines traced over his face which has now been replaced with wrinkles and worry lines.

"I will." and I mean it.

Since my apartment was still trashed from the intruder of course, we head back to Abbie's place to review the files.

Ten minutes of reviewing and endless mugs of coffee I finally find something interesting.

"ABBIE. Look at this."

"What is it?"

"It's Drew's birth certificate."

"So?"

I turn towards her with a grave look on my face and I point to one of the names highlighted on the faded page.

"Chief is listed as the father."

I wake up early in the morning as the sunlight poured through the blinds.

I had slept on her couch that rolls out into a bed, even though Abbie had begged to let her take the couch instead because I quote "You had a sucky night."

I roll out of bed to fix breakfast and I sit it onto the table. I then walk over to my charger to find it unplugged.

"Abbie have you seen my phone?" I call out.

"Oh yea, I have it right here, and you have an admirer." she sings the ending part and I snatch the phone from her hand to find a new text message.

So I was thinking maybe a second date, How does coffee at 2 sound? I'll meet you at the Espresso bean.

I bite my lip to keep back a smile and see Abbie already grinning.

"You, my friend like that guy." she stated simply, and I blush.

"Maybe a little." I admitted

She squealed, and insisted I had to go.

"C'mon it's already 1! We need to get you ready!"

"Alright alright!" I respond with a yes to his text, and let Abbie drag me to her wardrobe so I could borrow an outfit, Since of course mine were in shreds.

"Hmm. What's casual for a coffee date?" Abbie wondered aloud then she snapped.

"I got it!"

She threw a dress and shoes at me to put on and I quickly change.

It was a casual dress that was a beautiful shade of royal blue. It hung all the way to my knees and the back of it showed the small of my back. She had paired it with black flats with tiny beading. I kept my makeup to just mascara and lipgloss.

"You're ready." Abbie grinned at me with the stamp of approval and practically pushed me out the door.

"What are you going to do while I'm gone?" I ask.

"I'm going to catch a taxi to go see if my car is fixed." she stated quickly

"Now go, lover boy is waiting, and you're running out of time."

Lots of plot twists!!! And they're going to continue unraveling in the next chapter so get excited!!
