You listened silently to Bruce as he developed his plan. You heard Diana's protests. You clenched your teeth. But you didn't say anything. You stood there, silent, during the entire conversation. At some point, you noticed Aquaman's - no, Arthur's - eyes on you. Bruce and Diana were the only ones who were really aware of your bond with Clark, but the man had proved to be surprisingly intuitive so far. You forced yourself to give him a smile, but it didn't work out that well.
Diana came to see you almost immediately after the end of the talk. You could tell Bruce's comment had upset her, but she seemed worried about you.
"(Y/N). I know the bond you shared with Clark, but I stand behind what I said."
You shook your head, sighing. Truth was, you didn't know how to feel on that entire issue. You wanted Clark back, more than anything. You were terrified of how selfish you were on that, of how you'd have brought him back just for you, just so you wouldn't feel that aching pain in your chest all the damn time. You'd have brought him back just for a day, just for a kiss, just for a smile.
But that? That was different. That was bringing him back to use him. And, yeah, you were a superhero in and you knew it was the right thing to do and you knew it was for the best, but bringing him back to fight... You didn't want that. He didn't deserve that.
Hope was stronger, though. Hope for the both of you. You bit your lip.
"I understand, Diana. I understand every words you said. But if we can bring him back... I want to at least try."
You quickly looked away so she wouldn't notice the tears in your eyes and she nodded stiffly. She put her hand on your shoulder and squeezed lightly, before leaving in Bruce's direction, leaving you alone with your thoughts and your guilt.
You decided not to join on Barry and Victor's expedition to dig up Clark's body. That was pretty much the point where you drew the line. Bringing your dead boyfriend back to life so he could fight a terrible threat, okay, digging up his own body yourself, nope.
You went to meet Bruce, dressed as Batman, as he watched Barry going into the base. You ran into Diana, but she obviously wasn't in the mood to talk. Bruce turned to look at you, and you caught a glimpse of worry in his eyes.
"(Y/N). I know how you might feel about this..."
You bit back a scoff. You were pretty sure he had avoided you all day so that he wouldn't have to have that conversation with you, and while you understood him, you still felt pretty disrespected. Yet you knew that you were probably the only one for whom he would have stopped, while knowing that he shouldn't stop, so you couldn't exactly blame him.
"I'm okay with it, Bruce. We don't have a choice."
The words tasted like a lie. You knew that deep down, inside of you, there was a disgusting part that didn't care about any of that, that didn't care about Earth's destruction, and who just wanted to see Clark again. You hated that part of you. You tried to shut it down as well as possible, but you just couldn't simply delete it, and it drove you crazy.
"I think you should stay here," Bruce said.
"What?" you asked, snapping all of a sudden, turning to look at him. He kept his eyes on the truck, but you could tell he was uncomfortable. He gulped down.
"We don't know what will happen in there, but no matter what, there's one thing that Clark wouldn't forgive himself for."
He looked at you, and you understood what he meant, but you were still vibrating with anger.
"Do you mean, something he wouldn't forgive you for? What is it, Bruce? Are you afraid I won't be able to protect myself? Who do you think I am? I'm just as qualified as you, and more than either Barry or Victor! You're willing to let those two kids risk their life and you don't think I'll be able to protect myself? Is that really what you think of me?"
