I hugged her.
Well, what else could I do? It's not like I could just say, "Hey, it'll be alright, let's just forget about the boyfriends we've had and treasured for so long." I mean, physically I could say that, but it'd be stupid if I did. Gods, I need to stop thinking like that. It's not good.
Clearly, upon further inspection, she was trying to hold back more tears. But, of course, I had known from the start that she had been pretending to be strong, like I too would have. Once her sobbing stopped slightly, I had already formed a plan. A stupid plan, maybe. But I don't come up with stupid plans. There's a one in a hundredth chance that this will screw up, but the odds don't scare me. Not one bit.
Well, maybe just a little bit.
"Hey, Piper?" I asked. "Hmm?" she asked, her voice still slightly raw from crying. "Just... hear me out. I have a plan." I said calmly.
Okay, so only now I realize that there's no going back from this.
Oh gods.
Well, there's no turning back now. Now or never, go big or go home.
"We need revenge."
As soon as the words left my mouth, an uneasy feeling washed over me, but I took deep breaths to mask any sort of outward emotion the other girl could pick up on.
"Huh?"
I sighed. "As I said, I have a plan. If we're gonna get cheated on, we're definitely not going down silently. We're gonna turn these tables on them, right?" I raised a brow. "Now, I'm no daughter of Nemesis, but I have an inkling that being cheated on and finding out– not by word, but by sight– is a thing I should be able to react to strongly without judgment." Piper nodded along, and I clenched my fist.
"So, we're going to pretend to..."
Uh, maybe this wasn't the best plan. There are many other plans and many other actions I could've picked from, so why this? It's the most unstable, and by far, could easily destroy both Piper and me.
Oh well.
"We pretend to what?" she asked, curiosity in her voice. Crying was no longer happening from both of us, and we were now only talking like nothing had happened. Except, of course, something had happened. I cleared my throat, closing my eyes as my brows furrowed at my own audacity. Way to go, Chase, but you can't back out now.
I opened my eyes and let out a sigh. "Sorry, but you'll have to trust me on this one," I said quickly. "We're going to pretend to be together." A cough. "Obviously."
Piper stayed silent for a moment.
Holy Hephaestus, this is embarrassing.
I suddenly became hyperaware of every sensation prickling on my skin as humiliation began to take over. "Um, yeah, sorry. That probably sounded wrong, right? Yeah. That's probably not the greatest idea. I see the flaws in it now, so we can just scrap it, if you want..." I felt a tiny blush coat my cheeks. "Overall, it's a pretty dumb idea." I scratched the back of my neck defeatedly. Stupid.
A moment of awkward silence passed as the brown haired girl seemed to think. It was unbearable, really– I could feel my pulse quicken in impatient anticipation.
Swiftly, Piper seemed to snap back to life as a laugh escaped her lips, a melancholic smile gracing her lips. "I'll do it," she answered. I sighed. "I know, it's a bad idea..." It took a while for the cogs in my head to turn. "Wait, what?" I was genuinely surprised that she had agreed with no second thoughts. "You're sure about this, right? We can always do something else to take our sweet, sweet revenge." I laughed awkwardly to try to ease the weird tension that was floating in the atmosphere.
