A N N A B E T H
I woke up to snickering and whispering.
I felt something warm on my shoulder and I blinked the sleep out of my eyes, realizing that it was the next day already. Oh Gods. Did I sleep here? I heard someone snicker and I faintly heard Leo cough. I knew it was him because he coughed like, "KOFF–WHEEEEEZE". Honestly it was a bit concerning, but was logically most likely from inhaling smoke from his machines and his workplace and more.
I rubbed my eyes and saw dozens of campers surrounding me. I was confused. "Wh-what?" I asked, stuttering because of my morning voice. My voice became low and gravelly and I hated it. I then saw the crowd part slightly and Drew popped out of the small crowd. She pointed to my shoulder, where the heavy, warm thing was. I turned to where she pointed and saw Piper. I flinched in surprise. She looked very peaceful, her breathing calm and steady. She also had quite a cute way of breathing while asleep. She would breathe in from her nose then lightly exhale from her mouth. I relaxed. I kind of didn't want this moment to end...
But then I remembered the crowd around us and most especially Drew. I sighed and prodded her shoulder lightly. "Piper, wake up, please." I whispered. "Five more minutes." She said groggily, shifting around. I rolled my eyes irritably and turned red at all the attention. People snickered now. I shook her harder. "WAKE UP!" I hissed. She opened her eyes groggily. "Fine, fine, I'm up, I'm up-"
She flinched suddenly at the sight of me. "WOAH, Annabeth. That's a bit too close for comfort, huh?" She said, nervously. Some people snickered and Jason and Percy nudged their way up front. "Er- Wise Girl? Pipes?" asked Percy. I gulped and stood up.
I put on my "stern" face. The one that read, "I WILL KILL YOU IF YOU THINK ABOUT THIS".
I turned to Piper and stood up. I offered her a hand and she took it hesitantly, standing up. I almost laughed out loud. She had drool crust on her cheek. But then realization hit me. "Oh Gods!" I whisper-cursed. Everyone turned to look at me, somehow knowing of my whisper. I wiped at my shoulder rapidly. My tiny shirt sleeve didn't help, because it had lowered and half my shoulder was exposed. I scratched at the rest of the crust and nudged my sleeve up, sending the guys death glares.
Piper coughed awkwardly.
"Um, so we'll get going now, little crowd...." I said, tugging Piper behind me. Our hands were still interlocked on where I helped her up, and we never let go. To be completely honest, it felt right. But people noticed. Someone cat-called and I clenched my hands into fists. Which, was a bad idea, since I crushed Piper's hand. She muttered something in French and let go of my hand. I glared at the crowd and they scattered away, except for Percy and Jason.
They walked up to us and sighed. "Why were you asleep here of all places?!" Asked Jason. "Yeah! You could've slept in your own cabins, unless you wanted a sleep over. A first date sleep shouldn't be that wild." Percy added. I turned red. "But we're not–!" Piper said.
He shrugged. "Well, you're under the impression with many, MANY, campers." Said Jason. Percy nodded as to prove his point. I surprisingly didn't groan. I looked over at Piper, who had a mischievous grin plastered on her pretty little face. She tapped my arm. "Hey, Annie~!" She said excitedly. I sighed and rolled her eyes. When she got this excited last time, Leo had set her hair on fire. Please, don't bother asking. Please.
"What if we gave the crowd what they wanted~?" She asked. I stepped back. "Wait, what?!" Percy rubbed his hands together "Ooh. That would cause a bit of a stir." He said. Jason kicked his shin.
"I-well-why would we..?!" I stumbled. She rolled her eyes and grabbed my hands and looked into my eyes, bouncing up and down like a deadly but cute bunny. "Pleeease?" She asked, doing something like puppy dog eyes. But ten times more convincing. Kind of like Percy's hurt seal eyes. But this time, I couldn't say no. "...Fine. But it'll be risky. We did this last time to the boys and stuff happened. Kinda." I warned. She squealed and jumped up and down. Then she rubbed her hands together. "Oooh, I can't wait for their reactions." She snickered. I rolled my eyes. "You're hopeless, you know?" I said. She nodded. "Yeah. I figured." She smirked.
Jason snickered. "So, guys, see you at breakfast. Which, actually, is in one minute." He said. We were silent for a moment.
Then we ran to the tables. Piper tripped over a snail in front of everybody and she flew right into me. I coughed and she squeaked indignantly. She had collided with my stomach and she was in top of me. "How are we always in situations like this?" I hissed to her. She shrugged. "But this is where we start getting the crowd STARTED!" She whispered. "Wait, what are you gonna do-"
She looked up at everyone, who was snickering at us. She shrugged. "That's an okay amount of people watching, right?" She asked. "Huh? Well, I suppose so, but what are you gonna do?" I asked. "Annabeth, I literally have no idea why I feel so hyper and happy right now, but oh well. I also have no idea why we always end up like this. But sorry in advance!" She said. "Wait, why?"
She helped me up out of our awkward position and she stood up in front of me. Everyone was watching us while eating, some talking to each other like we weren't there. "Seriously, Piper, what are you going to do?" I asked. She shrugged. "I honestly have no idea. Please help." She said. I sighed.
She let out an soft whistle, which brought everyone to our attention. She grabbed my shoulders. "I have no idea why I'm doing this." She said, squeezing her eyes shut. Someone yelled, "JUST KISS ALREADY!!" We flinched. The voice definitely belonged to a Stoll brother. Definitely.
Piper didn't let go of my shoulders. What she did instead was pull me forwards aggressively, but somehow manage to gently connect our lips, which also, somehow felt very nice and very right. I could taste a small bit of her vanilla chapstick, but I was way too lost to lose myself in the moment. What? I mean, I was too not lost to not lose– to lose me– I lost her– me– what?
I suddenly squeaked, realization hitting me, and widened my eyes. Her eyes opened and she winked at me. I felt myself turn red and she pulled away, mumbling a weak 'sorry' and then skipped to her table, where everyone was open mouthed. Even Drew. I just stood there, blushing and covering my mouth with a hand.
I think it was time to start pretending.
