I woke in the morning. The sun was bursting in through the window, I was groggy from the sleep, tangled in the sheets, but somehow... my hand was still intertwined with yours.
I heard you sigh softly in your sleep and then you rolled over, stirring.
I held my breath for a few moments, I didn't want to wake you up. But as I slowly moved my head to look up at you, you opened your eyes.
You yawned widely and stretched for a second, before your eyes locked with mine, you noticed me.
"Good morning," you said, and smiled softly.
I broke out into a grin and squeezed your hand, "look," I glanced at our hands.
"Wow, I didn't think that we'd still be holding hands in the morning."
I mocked a fake gasp and pretended to be offended. "You didn't want to be holding my hand? So rude."
"Shut up." You pretended to glare at me.
I ignored the glare, smiled and lifted your hand up. You opened your mouth to ask what I was doing, but it became apparent to you as soon as I kissed the back of your hand.
"Happy birthday."
"Oh! It's my birthday!"
"You forgot!?"
She smiled sheepishly. "I got distracted..."
"What could possibly distract you from your seventeenth birthday?!"
She narrowed her eyes and grinned. "You..."
"Wooooww, okay that was cheesy. I guess I walked right into that one." I laughed.
"Cheesy?! I thought it was nice!"
"It was sweet," I said quickly and kissed the back of her hand again. "You're my age again! I'm not older than you."
"Yay." You laughed.
I let go of your hand and sat up, yawning. "What time is it?"
You checked your phone. "Six-thirteen."
"God it's early... oh well, time for your present!"
"Now?!"
"No, you have to wait a year!"
You rolled your eyes at me as I leant down and scooped the gift bag off the floor.
"Ta-da!" I held it out.
You reached for it.
I snatched it back towards me, giggling. "You have to sit up for it!"
"Uggghhh," you complained, "I'm comfortable, sitting up is effort."
"Nope. Sit up!"
You sat up. I gave you the bag.
You started by rifling around and pulled out the card. You opened the envelope slowly, not ripping it at all, and then slipped out the card.
I watched your eyes move back and forth, slowly gliding down the card as you read it. Your face slowly broke into a smile.
"Kat!" You finished the card and threw your arms around me. "Thank you so much!"
When you pulled back you turned back to the gift bag. You plucked out all of the gift tissue paper and glanced inside the bag. "Was it all literally just one gift?"
I smiled. "Why don't you see what it is?"
You reached in and pulled out the small box. Your eyes quickly met mine before you looked back down. You looked nervous, yet excited.
I could feel the butterflies in the pit of my stomach. I hoped that you liked it. But of course you'd like it...
You slowly opened the box, and there, perfectly sitting, glimmering, just how it was when I put it in there, was the necklace. With the shiny silver heart.
A quiet sound escaped you as you took it in. Including the small diamond in the heart.
I shakily leant forward and moved toward the heart necklace. "And when y-you flip it over..." I flipped the heart. And there, right there on the other side, was the engraving.
Our initials, linked with an '&' symbol.
I looked up and your eyes were filled with tears.
You hugged me then, tighter than before.
"That's a big enough diamond for now, right? I mean, it's just your seventeenth birthda-"
You pulled back quickly and that cut me off. "Shut up." And you hugged me.
