"I have something to tell you," Sophie, one of my closest friends, breathed.
I slowed to a stop as she tried to catch her breath. She'd seen me from across the car park and ran to catch up, as if she just couldn't wait.
"What is it?" I ask quietly. The anxiety hidden deep inside me started to unfurl.
"It's her."
I immediately froze.
"All night she would I'm not stop ranting," Sophie slightly rolled her eyes, but grinned. "The new girl, you know how you and her are getting close?"
"Oh, Ashley?" I asked, wondering what she had to do with anything.
"Yeah, apparently Ashley's getting too close to you..." Sophie raised her eyebrows. "She wouldn't stop ranting about how you're her best friend, not Ash's." Sophie stopped and stared at me.
I froze completely and stared back. "What about it?" I asked a second later, trying to act like I didn't care at all.
Sophie's lips quirked into a smile. "She was very jealous."
My heart sped up. Jealous? I looked back up at her as my defence mechanism started to kick in- panic and cover it all up. "Is this about you shipping us again?" I sighed.
It's true, ever since I came out to Sophie, she would not stop passing comments about how my best friend and I were perfect for each other. I mean, I agreed with her but I couldn't tell her that.
I could never tell her that.
"Yes..." Sophie laughed.
Behind all of my panic, all I could think about is her, my best friend, and her being jealous of me with someone else...
"Ugh, we're never going to end up together," I said. Then I turned and walked away, secretly hoping, with all of my heart, that I was telling a lie.
