It's been a couple weeks since Octavia and I actually met. We got closer since then and it seemed like we knew each other for forever. It was the break of dawn when I heard something dropping on the roof of my tent. I peered outside of the opening to see it was raining. A few people that were lurking outside quickly ran for shelter. Ever since I landed on Earth years ago, I've always stood in the middle of the rain, embracing the drops that landed gracefully on my skin. I didn't understand why they ran for cover. It was just rain. I couldn't help myself but I took off my jacket and threw it aside. I looked back at Leyla still sleeping, and walked out into the rain. Everyone just starred at me like I was some wild animal.
"What are you doing?! Get out of the rain! It might be acidic!", Clarke warned from the infirmary.
"It's just rain!", I yelled back. I looked up to the clouds and closed my eyes. The drops landed on my skin and trickled down. Its a weird sensational feeling that I always feel in the rain. Earth was just full of phenomenas that are waiting to surprise the finder.
I held my hands out to catch the rain in my palms. Leyla suddenly ran to me and hugged me tightly.
"It's cold!", she giggled. I laughed with her and looked at the infirmary. Raven walked out and joined us. Not long after Raven came, Octavia stepped out. Then people were slowly trickling out from their shelters. Leyla started to jump in puddles and splashed me with water. I gasped in surprise and splashed her back. Everyone started to have a water war. After about five minutes, I look over to see Clarke sitting at the entrance of the infirmary, watching everyone. I ran over to her and said, "Come on. Its just rain. It doesn't hurt to have a little fun, right?"
"I'm fine. I'll just stay and watch. I have a lot to do anyways," She said as she held up a radio.
"Oh come on!" I said as I grabbed her wrist and pulled her outside. We stopped in the middle of the camp ground and let the rain soak us.
Clarke laughed in amazement and looked up to the clouds. The only person who wasn't outside having fun was Bellamy. He was just sitting on a stool at the opening of his tent, sharpening a wooden stake. We made eye contact and held it there until Leyla skipped over to me.
"It's getting cold", she shivered. Suddenly, there was thunder and a lightning flash. Clarke told everyone to go back to their tents and dry off before they catch a cold.
"Remember in the old days we would race back home from training?" Raven said to me as she walked up. I looked at Leyla, but before I could even blink, she was off running towards the infirmary.
"Hey that's not fair!", I said as Raven and I ran after her. We got to the entrance of the infirmary and we collapsed on the floor, panting.
"I win!", Leyla exclaimed.
"Thats not... fair you had a head start," I forced out. She giggled and handed me my jacket. Everyone in the infirmary seemed a lot more energized than before they ran into the rain. We all chatted and told stories while waiting for the rain to pass. The rain had stopped and so did everyone's energy level. Everyone had fell asleep. I sit up from where I was lying and looked out of the entrance. In the sky was a faint double rainbow. I've only seen it once when Leyla and I were watching birds in a tree one time. I formed a rectangle with my index fingers and thumbs, and held it up to the rainbow. I quickly woke Leyla up before she missed the rainbow.
"It has six colors." She whispered.
"Good job. Can you spell them?"
"R-e-d, o-r-a-n-g-e, y-e-l-o-w..."
"You missed an "L" in yellow. Y-e-l-l-o-w."
"Y-e-l-l-o-w, g-r-e-... A?"
"No, "E""
"G-r-e-e-n, b-l-u-e, p-u-r-p-l-e."
"Nice job! High five!"
I tried to teach Leyla all I knew from the Ark. Kind of like homeschooling.
"Mommy, why is that man watching us over there?".
I looked over at Bellamy observing us, but then he turned away and went into his tent.
"I don't know. But don't worry, he won't hurt you."
"What is that?", Octavia said looking at the sky.
"It's a rainbow. You've me never seen one before?", Leyla asked her.
"No, not since I've been here. A rainbow?..."
"It's caused when water particles in the air are penetrated by sunlight".
Octavia scoffs in amazement and said, "How in the world do you know that? You're only nine years old!"
"My mommy taught me. She's an engineer."
"It's not because i'm an engineer sweetie. I learned it from your... Uncle", I paused, "Are you okay?"
Murphy wouldn't stop coughing ever since the rain started.
"Yeah I'm... I'm fine.", he sat up.
"I'll get you some water. I'll be right back." I got up and headed towards the wash tent. There were two faucets and containers stack up between them. I took one of the containers and tried to figure out which was clean water. They were quite the abstraction. The person who built this was smart enough to melt thin metal and mold it instead of trying to tape all the tubes together. Pretty impressive.
"Do all engineers study things this intently?", a voice, that made me jump, came from a corner.
Bellamy was leaning against a table, shirtless, with a towel around his neck. I ignored him and continued to figure out the faucets.
"The clean one is the right one.", he said, still in the same spot.
I opened the right faucet and filled up the container about half way. Then I took out some banana leaves from the inside of my jacket pocket, unwrapped it, and put all herbs into the container. He was still staring at me when I glanced over.
"What do you want?", I asked coldly.
"For us to talk. Properly."
"And what makes you think I want to talk to you again?", I threw the banana leaves aside.
"Considering out last 'talk' wasn't so much a talk."
"I have nothing to say to you and I never will."
"I understand that and I realized I need to earn not your forgiveness, but your trust. It's been nine years and I'm sure you've moved on. But you and Leyla are new here. Not a lot of people know who you are so you may need an acquaintance around here."
I scoffed, "Weren't you the one who said that I have Raven? So i'm good on the 'acquaintance' thing. You obviously don't know me very well because it takes a lot to earn my trust. You should probably give up on trying to earn it because that's never going to happen."
"I won't.", he said sternly.
"Why are you so desperate for my trust?", I was so aggravated by him. Before he could answer me, I heard Murphy coughing loudly and Clarke called from the infirmary, "Sloan hurry!"
I quickly grabbed the cup and power walked out of the wash tent, leaving the unfinished "talk".
Murphy was coughing so hard that blood came out.
"Hurry!" Clarke yelled when I reached the doc. I ran to Murphy, knelt down and tilted the cup to his mouth. He spat it out immediately.
"Ugh what.. is that?", he cringed.
"It's herbs. You need to drink this. It's helps soothe your throat."
He unwillingly opened his mouth and chugged it down. I took the cup from him and helped him to a chair. He was panting a lot.
"Try to control and pace your breathing.", Clarke said and she turned towards me, "What did you give him?"
"Some herbs I made. I keep it with me at all times in case of an injury or something like Murphy's condition."
Clarke nodded and went back tending Murphy's needs. I went over to Leyla and Raven and sat down.
"He's going to be okay right?", Leyla whispered.
"Yeah, he'll be fine.", I was half-paying attention to everything around me. My heart was still racing from the "talk". So many thoughts raced through my mind. There are seventy something people in this camp, why does he pay so much attention to me? I laid down and tried to sleep off the questions I had.
