“It’s summer!” I repeated to Alec for the seventh time. I was certain that he was coming with me, no matter what.
“But it sounds so unappealing.” He complained. “A room filled with half naked mundanes, floaty toys and children…I don’t think so.” Alec’s face was down as he attempted to try and get me to see his point of view, but he needed to understand mine too!
“Yes it’s a silly mundane thing but it will be fun I promise!”
“But-”
“-But nothing, we’re going.”
...
I smiled proudly as we entered the swimming pool, yes we were going swimming. I was sure I saw a flicker of fear in Alec’s eyes as he looked through the thin plane of glass at the pool. Without him noticing I had slipped into the locker and changed. Once back outside with him I tilted my head then followed his gaze to the pool.“Aren’t you changing? I could help you if you want me to?” I teased but he just sighed and left to get changed.
Something was up with him today, but I wasn’t sure what. Knocking attentively on his door I murmured his name. “Alec honey?” but I didn’t get much further as a hand placed itself on my shoulder. I turned around to see Jace, Clary and Isabelle all in their swimming gear.
“We got your message, where’s Alec?” Izzy asked. I looked towards the door and shrugged before smiling. Myself and Isabelle had grown closer over the past year, it was strange but I kind of liked it.
“Don’t you all look amazing?” I complimented them then winked. “Not as fabulous as me of course but good.” They all laughed then slid past me and the lockers to the pool.
“See you in there Magnus.” Clary nodded and Jace stayed peculiarly quiet. Jace was quiet and Alec wasn’t himself, was something going on? I demanded to know. The rush of small children laughing as they ran past to the pool distracted me for a slight moment. To be ignorant was a bliss.
Alec slowly opened the door and was in the shorts I had bought him, a navy blue that suited him well and matched his eyes, without the heart-melting shimmer of course. The sight of him made my knees knock subtly but I felt like my whole body was becoming a mush but a part of me wanted to keep him hidden. Now everyone here would see his body and it made a strange feeling rise out of no-where. He turned away from me and looked down which made the slight quiff in his hair droop.
“I know I look stupid, I told you this was a bad idea.”
“Alexander Gideon Lightwood…you look beautiful.” With that he turned back to face me, his cheeks a redish/pink colour. How was it he could look so sexy and adorable at the same time? We began to make our way towards the others in the pool. I jumped in, gracefully obviously, while Alec took the stairs. The splashes, squeals and broad smiles of several mundanes in the pool mixed with the strong scent of chlorine and the wave machiene was what this trip here was about. The water was cold but I soon grew accustomed to the temperature, unlike the three shadow hunters who were stood in a tight circle chattering.
“How the hell are you not freezing.”
“Hell doesn’t get cold.” I replied smoothly but then burrowed my eyebrows. In the midst of jumping in and swimming to them I had lost Alec. My eyes scanned the area to see him sat on the steps with just his knees in the water. His body seemed like if it could enfold on itself it would without warning. I swam over to him and gave an honest sympathetic look.
“You’re not okay…tell me.” Alec didn’t listen, or at least I didn’t think he did so I lifted his chin making his eyes look at mine. “Please tell me.” I half begged and bit my lower lip in anticipation.
“No Magnus.”
“Why not?”
“Because you’ll laugh at me.” That made me laugh but it shouldn’t have. He was taking this as a serious matter, I should too. His deep blue eyes had my heart recklessly beating against my chest. He was upset and still he did this to me. It felt unnatural. Supernatural. “See your laughing now.” He looked back down away from my grasp.
“I promise, whatever you tell me I wont laugh.”
He sighed. “I…” Alec started but couldn’t finish it. I took his hand gently and gave a reassuring smile but without both hands it was kind of difficult to tread water, which I was doing now.
“I..c-can’t swim. There I said it.” His voice was quiet to begin with but I still heard it and just smiled like th love-sick fool I was. My baby can’t swim. Well that meant I had to help him didn’t it? I pulled his hands making him fall into the pool onto of me but I didn’t let him fall under, in fact I went under but kept him up.
When back at the surface I just laughed and held him close. “Magnus!” He half yelled and clung to my hands for dear life.
“Just kick your feet.” I told him but his co-ordination was obviously not perfect. It made me half smirk but I didn’t laugh. He kept repeating to me over and over again that he was going to drown then holding his breath but he never went under. After about three minutes of him attempting to swim I moved quickly so he was on my back.
“Ready sweetie?” I asked but didn’t give him time to reply before I started swimming towards Jace, Clary and Isabelle who had moved from the small circle to actually swimming and playing.
“I told you this would be fun.” I re-told my shadowhunter in-between breaths.
