I sat by the road side. The hard packed dirt not disturbed by idle bikers or speeding cars was narrow and weaved in between the large trees. The slight breeze caused the red and orange leaves to lazy skip along the quiet road hardly making a sound.
Cracks covered some of the more worn looking areas making it look much older than it was and loose pebbles hung onto the edge as if holding on for dear life. The breeze picked up, making the tall grass and flowers that aligned the road move as if waving to some invisible viewer.
A car flew by on a nearby highway, tires squeaking as it took a corner too fast. But no cars flew down this road. The many pot-holes scattered down the entire way were filled with brown puddles just asking for a child with bright new shiny rain boots to splash in.
Trees that started to grow too close stretched out their roots, creating dips and bumps on what otherwise would be smooth areas. A warm fog was beginning to descend, hiding what no one ever saw anyways. But it's there, never ending and quiet, lazily stretching from one end to another just waiting for a traveller to make his mark, even if it's just a footprint.
My stomach growled reminding me of the constant hunger I felt but food was a rare occasion for me. My hands pushed my body from the cold hard floor. The row of houses that stretched along the road where eerie but I was used to it.
It only seemed ghostly with the fog moving in light swirls with the wind. The bag upon my shoulders was light as most of the things I owned where back in the wood. The wood was my home, for now.
I had a way of walking that made me seem like I was constantly in a perpetual hurry. I only knew this because my father had the same walk as me. The grief of thinking about him again came in waves and threatened to consume me entirely.
In this moment, it was my master.
My mind was at the mercy of its whims and at times bit with such ferocity I feared it would leave me empty. The numbness spread across every inch of my body, the salty tears that flowed unchecked from my eyes and the sinking feeling was as barren as the moors on a desolate winter morn. The cold licked at my face and crept under my clothes, spreading across my skin like the lacy tide and it did nothing but make me walk faster and shake the numbing memories from my mind.
A few moments later I was at the edge of the wood, the main bare branch spike high into the sky. No sight of life to be found anywhere. It was dark you were barely able to see where you were going. Small sounds of ruffling bushes and howl of the wind. The dark forest was familiar but that didn’t mean the dark shadows strewn across the landscape didn’t make my insides turn involuntarily with fear.
The black silhoutte of a tall, lanky figure emerged from the tree line with an extrodinarily bright light in his hand. The light seemed to almost burn my eyes but it was the main source of light in the dark of the night.
It seemed to almost chase the darkness away and I wasn't afraid anymore. The figure and the light vanished into a different set of trees as soon as they had appeared and without thinking I darted after them. The light was a gleaming white, almost calming making me forget about the darkness surronding me or the branches snapping visciously underneath my feet.
"Stop!" The low voice yelled. So I did. I stopped.
His eyes gleamed a light electric blue and his hair was so dark that it matched the sky. The light of the witchlight reflected from his eyes in an undescribable way. In that moment as I was day dreaming a fierce whoosh of air pushed from behind me making me fall unto my knees and scratch and cut my hands on the sharp sticks unpon the cold ground.
As my eyes quickly shot upwards they saw it wasn't the wind that caused the rush of air but a dark matter that held no form and weaved in and out of the trees. When the creature stirred the world and time ceased to no longer exist. Made of pure blood and evil it seemed to grow twice in size and block out the light radiating from the stone.
I stayed in my crouched position and squinted my eyes trying to see the figure that was previously stood before me but it was difficult. The tingle underneath my fingertips began again just like before the incident with my father. I tried my best to sit on my hands and keep it hidden but it worked with my emotions. Adrenaline and fear.
The blue sparks emerged from the tips of my fingers and lit up the forest so I could see properly. Just as I did so the creature let out of a violent cry of pain and fell to the floor. Red mist smoked from around it then it vanished like nothing had ever happened.
The figure was in a protective stance with a silver blade in his hand, his hair was now messy and stuck up in funny places. My lips were parted and my eyes wide in shock. I had no idea who he was or what that thing was but something inside secured my faith in him.
"Magnus?" The man before me asked. he had black clothing on and dark spiralling marks drawn all over his arms.
"Who are you?" I blurted out and burrowed my eyebrows.
"Alec. From the future. It's complicated but everything is or will be okay now." He spoke with such confidence I couldn't do anything but believe his every word. My head nodded slightly at his words to let him know I believed him too.
"Why did you come here?"
"I can't say...Future you told me not too." Alec replied with a small yet slightly nervous chuckle. "You are such a cute child however." He added. I burrowed my eyebrows again and looked away slightly towards the stars. The stone shone brightly as he touched it and walked closer to me, the branches crunching under his step.
"I have to go now, but I'll see you soon. I swear to the Angel." Alec's eyes sparkled as he promised but I didn't understand. Who was the Angel? How would I know him? How was he here right now? I sighed and closed my eyes but upon opening them again he was gone and so was the light so for now at least I was alone again in the dark, lonely forest to suffer the burden of the sparks inside in silence.
