I knocked on the door of the institute, I was to stay there tonight. Simply because I had been asked too by Alec. His family were home and I had a feeling he was going to announce to them him being homosexual. He hadn’t told them…yet.

Jace answered and nodded as a gentle hello gesture then after I had stepped inside he closed the door and left.

“Such a talkative person today Jace.” I muttered and headed upstairs to Alec’s bedroom. I had been in the institute enough times now in my lifetime to know my way around easily.

Mayrse was walking the opposite way down the corridor and burrowed her eyebrows.

“Who summoned you here.” She practically spat. The lightwoods. Notorious for their hatred of downworlders. Great.

“You do realise you’re talking to a high warlock who could have you stuck to the ceiling in a pit of flying snakes that can breathe fire right?” I asked and tilted my head. It was in that instance when my glamour failed and she caught a good glimpse of my golden cat eyes.

She scoffed and folded her arms stubbornly over her chest, so that’s where Alec got that irritated stance from.

“If you don’t explain why you’re here I’ll throw you out myself!” Her voice grew high and she was almost shrieking. But I had expected this from her and Robert so it didn’t scare or surprise me. “Don’t think I won’t Magnus Bane because I will!”

Isabelle and Alec both turned the corner as she yelled her last sentence. Alec’s eyebrows burrowed and he shot a sympathy glance at me.

“What in heaven is going on here?” Isabelle asked and copied Maryse irritated stance. Maybe it was a family thing.  She ignored her daughter and kept her eyes upon me.

“I am in fact here upon a wish of one of your children and despite that I will not cease to keep quiet if you don’t keep this attitude to yourself. You have another downworlder in the institute if I’m not mistaken, it would be mean to let him stay and not me.” I smiled a sarcastic smile.

“Simon isn’t-” Isabelle tried to defend him but Mayrse silenced her with the raise of her finger then tutted and strutted her way out of the corridor. Isabelle ran after her mother yelling several questions about downworlders and Simon leaving me and Alec in the corridor alone.

“Hey…” He mumbled quietly and looked up at me with those innocent eyes of his. They were swimming with worry and guilt.

I leant down and placed my lips upon his in a sweet yet short kiss.

“Hello.” I replied and he smiled against my lips. The sound of footsteps had him at least two steps away from me. His breathing had hitched making me feel bad. He was acting like he had seen a ghost, as frightened as a mouse.

“It will be okay.” I reminded him and nodded my head gently. He looked up at me and I was sure my inside were melting by the look in his eyes. Alec returned the nod and closed the gap between us with a hug. His arms wrapped around my sides and his head buried in my chest.

---

I had taken him to his room and we were laying together. His hands were shaking lightly, it was only an hour until dinner time when he planned to let them know.

“Do Isabelle and Jace know?” I asked, my chin resting upon his head.

Alec half laughed. It was one of his nervous habits along with biting the inside of his cheek. “That I’m gay or that I’m going to tell my parents?”

“That you’re going to tell your parents.”

“Jace does. He felt I was well…shaken and insisted I tell him why.” We stayed silent for a while after that. It was nice to just lay with him in silence, it was almost therapeutic. I loved him but something inside told me that if it came down to his parents asking him to leave me he would do that for family. Another very annoying traits of lightwoods; not only are they known for hating downworlders it’s family over life. Unfortunately that doesn’t just mean blood relatives but the entirety of shadowhunters across the world.

I smiled to myself, lucky that if Alec did try to die for a fellow shadowhunter he wouldn’t succeed. Not if I was there.

Jace didn’t even bother knocking he just waltzed straight into Alec’s room and was twizling his stele in his right hand.

“Time to draw every single rune that will stop you worrying, falling, vomiting and any other incident that could happen from happening.” His smile was toothy and he was stood waiting. Maybe he expected Alec to be in a rush to get this done but he wasn’t. His movements were slow, like that of a snail.

I sat up and hung my legs over the edge of the bed watching. First the fearless rune was drawn, then courage in battle (Jace insisted that this helped internal battles as well as fighting) and a balancing rune.

The sizzling of his skin made me cringe but it looked almost painless, just the occasional grunt. I stopped watching after the first three where drawn and became lost in my own thoughts.

“All done.” Jace announced around 5 minutes later. “Hey, uhm Magnus there isn’t a spell or anything you could do to sweeten Mayrse and Robert is there?”

“If there was, which there most likely is, they would notice quickly and dislike it adding to how much they hate me and so I’m sorry but I don’t want to be hated by my boyfriend’s parents.”

“Fair.”

“Okay let’s go.” Alec nodded and almost bounced off the bed. I guess the runes did work.
