Chapter 35

The next morning I woke up in a pool of my own sweat, breathing heavily as if someone was pumping air into me like a balloon.

"Hayden you're ok. It was just a nightmare." Louis said

"No...it wasn't a nightmare, it was real." I cried

Louis just pulled me into his chest and kissed me on my forehead.

"Sshhh, it's ok, you're here with me. Look at me Hayden."

He grabbed my chin to turn and look at him.

"He can't hurt you anymore, ok? I won't let him."

"But where the hell is he?! Doesn't it worry you at all that we have no clue where he is?!"

"Yes, but as long as you're with me you're fine. We just can't be careless again, okay?"

"Okay."

Almost on cue Louis' cell phone rang.

"I wonder who that could be." Louis said.

"Hello?" Louis answered

"Yeah she's fine,

ok......, oh my god,

no...I'll tell her.

Thank you for calling."

Louis put his phone back in his pj pant pocket

"Who was that?" I asked.

"That was one of the cops from the police station. Louis started. "Officer Frank um...found your dad."

"Oh my god where?" I asked, slightly scared to find out.

"On highway 89, in his car...

...Dead." Louis replied.

I didn't know what to say. Should I be happy? The man who abused me, nearly killed me, and made my life miserable is dead. I don't have to worry about him anymore. But should I be sad?...My dad, a parent, a human being who was supposedly a kind hearted man before I stepped into the picture is dead. I should feel regret, like it was my fault, like I could have saved him if I had just done what he told me to do.

"How do you think it happened?" I didn't know what else to ask.

"They said he had to have been going at least 95 in a 50 speed limit area. He was probably in a hurry after knowing the cops were gonna be looking for him. Are you okay?"

"Yeah" I said. "Why wouldn't I be?"

"Well I just thought you'd be kind of... I don't know, relieved? I mean he almost killed you. He was a horrible man Hayden, don't you dare feel sorry for him. He doesn't deserve your pity."

"I know. I know. You're right, he deserved to die."

Louis pulled me into a hug.

"I'll go make us breakfast if you just want to be alone for a while." He said rubbing my arm.

"Sure, thanks." I kissed his cheek quickly before he went downstairs.
