Scene 2: Island

The family is sitting on their homemade raft, paddling toward land. The captain's dogs are enthusiastically climbing all over Franz.

Franz: (Frantically using his cupped hand as a paddle) Paddle, Fritz, paddle! Come on, Papa! Come on Turk! Come on, Dune!

Elisabeth: Franz, be careful! Don't go falling off.

Jacqueline: And then the sharks would eat you!!

Franz: (Jumps back wildly and pulls his hand out.) There are - sharks - in this water?

Jacqueline: (Laughing at him.) Yes, I'm sure Abigail read about it in a book somewhere.

Abigail: (Shaking her head at Jaqueline) Look, Franz, we're almost there!

Laurence hops off the raft and starts dragging it onto the shore. Fritz follows. The family and dogs disembark.

Elisabeth: Now, what shall we do for a shelter tonight?

Abigail: A lean-to?

Jacqueline: There are lots of branches!

Elisabeth: (To Jacqueline) Why don't you and Franz start pulling them into a pile. Fritz, Papa, and I will build, and Abigail, why don't you start supper?

Abigail: Supper? With what?

Laurence: (Pulling a sack off the raft) Mother packed some food from the ship.

Abigail: Crackers? Dried pork?

Elisabeth: (Already dragging a branch) Heat some water and we'll make a stew.

Abigail: (Doubtfully) Alright...
