A couple months later. Emily, Elisabeth, Abigail, Laurence, and Fritz are tilling a place for fruit trees.
Franz: (Running in) Mother! Mother!
Elisabeth: (Straightening from her digging) What is it, dear?
Franz: (Out of breath) Mother! I want to go fishing! Can you take me fishing, Mother?
Elisabeth: Franz, you know we are busy with the orchard.
Franz: But Father said I could go fishing when we ran out of meat.
Elisabeth: (With a look at Laurence) Darling, we need to get this finished and start planting.
Emily: I'll take him.
Franz: (Pleased) Really?
Elisabeth: (Grudgingly) Well, be careful.
Laurence: Have a good time. Bring back some fish for supper!
Elisabeth: And don't stay out too long.
Emily: All right! Let's go, Franz!
Franz: I'll get my fishing pole. (He grabs it and the two of them set off for the stream.) Emily, tell me about the pirates!
Emily: (Dramatically) Well, at first it was just me and my grandfather and the men on the ship. We sailed along, and the sun shone brightly. Then, suddenly, a dot appeared on the horizon. It came closer and closer. Then, through the spyglass, I saw the black flag. It had a skull on it, and crossbones underneath.
Franz: (Wide-eyed) Oh!
Emily: The ship came nearer and nearer. A cannon went off!
Flashback scene.
Emily: Grandfather! What shall we do?
Grandfather: (Holding out a bundle) Put these on! Get below!
Emily: (Scared) But, Grandfather - I want to help!
Pirate Captain: (Off set) Come on, ye scallywags! Board their ship and conquer!
Grandfather: GO!
There is another cannon blast!
Pirate: (Off) Throw me that rope!
Pirate 2: (Off) 'Ere, matey!
Captain: (Now on the ship) Hand over yer gold! (Begins to advance on Sorensen)
Grandfather: Sir, I don't think-
Captain: Yes, clearly ye don't. Hand over the gold!
Pirate: (Off) Cap'n!
Captain: (Menacingly) Yeees?
Pirate: (Off) We've found the gold! It's righ' 'ere in the cabin!
Captain: Ah.
Emily: (Emerging in the boy's outfit pulled out by a pirate) Grandfather!
Grandfather: Em! (Wrenches her away from Pirate 1)
Pirate: (Angry at Grandfather) Ay! (Then distracted) Cap'n!
Captain: What is it?
Pirate: We've landed!
Captain: (Coming on) No! Cursed island!
Grandfather: (Whispering) Run! I'll come as soon as I can!
