“I-I’m sorry, Yukio…” Her voice was soft and could hardly carry itself across the snowy field. Her tawny, demon eyes flitted any direction but the exorcist’s, and her hands were unable to keep still. She continued in a softer, more strangled voice, “I’ve wronged you terribly, and I would be surprised if you-“
The phoenix gasped as arms enveloped her shaking form, and these soft words fluttered against her ears, as soft as a butterfly’s wing: “Of course I forgive you, (Name)… How could I not?”
The pure and raw emotion of his voice sent the guilt in her gut growing further. She had pained him so much, more than she would have ever thought possible, and yet, he still loved her with a deep and fierce gentleness that only he possessed.
She thought these suffocating feelings of guilt and anger would be diminished as a demon, but they only intensified to the point that drowning in them seemed like the only way to escape. Being driven mad by such harsh emotions seemed a better option than trying to salvage her relationship with the boy whom embraced her.
(Name) wanted to scream at him, curse him out, and turn him away from her forever. He deserved much a better love than hers. One pure like snow, untouched by the unfaithfulness of a lost phoenix.
Suddenly, her hands clenched around the buttons of his exorcist uniform, and (Name) found it hard to breathe. She tried to pull away from Yukio’s embrace only to find that he had trapped her in tighter.
“L-Let go o-of me, Yukio,” she pleaded, and the black fabric of his uniform tore at the strength of her claws further adding to her guilt.
“I can’t do that,” he told her, “not until you look at me.”
(Name) hesitated, and her ears and tail twitched nervously as she tried to decide which step to take: look at him for a moment and be free, or stay wallowing in her guilt and be stuck with him.
Breath hissed through her teeth, but (Name) finally looked at the exorcist. Almost immediately, the tears she had been trying to hold back spilled down her cheeks, and she clutched tighter to his jacket to keep from falling to her knees.
Yukio’s turquoise eyes held the sting of emotions she would have expected; anger, confusion, hurt, betrayal. But stunningly, he was smiling at her in a sad, longing sort of way. It was a smile of someone relieved and beyond joy. He was glad that she was here and that she was all right.
Yukio pressed his forehead to hers, and she felt her lungs expand deeply. The suffocating feeling had lifted from her chest, and (Name) could breathe again… truly breathe. His air was hers and her air was his. No matter what had changed, this was always meant to be.
The exorcist leaned in tentatively and pressed his lips to hers. And the demoness pressed back with gentle eagerness.
