"Kendall Jane Wagner," the Dean called. I walked from the long line of my fellow college graduates and received my diploma. Looking out at the crowd from the stage, I could see my father sitting with David. I smiled to them before coming off the stage and standing back in line.
I sat down when the row behind mine stood up. I stayed in that chair for another two hours; college graduations are even longer than high school.
After the ceremony, I met my dad and David back at our house. For some reason, having my dad in mine and David's house gave me chills. I didn't want him in here, it seemed too personal.
"Congrats, baby," David said into my ear, snaking his arm around my waist.
I smiled. "Thank you."
"So what's the plan now?" Dad asked.
"The company I've been interning at offered me a position, so I'm taking it," I replied.
Dad seemed shocked. "Already?"
"They like my work," I shrugged.
He nodded in response. I continued chopping up fruits and vegetables while he and David went to the living room and talked idly. A knock sounded at the door.
"I'll get it," I said.
I opened the door to a mail man holding a huge bouquet of yellow roses.
"I have a delivery for Kendall Wagner," he droned.
"That's me," I nodded. He thrusted the vase of flowers at me. "Thank you!" I called as he sauntered back to the boxy truck.
"What's that?" David asked as I carried the roses to the kitchen.
I acted oblivious. "I don't know."
After making sure David wasn't coming into the kitchen, I pulled the small envelope off the plastic holder and opened it.
Kendall,
Congratulations, I'm so proud of you. I miss you. Call soon.
Xoxo Brendon
I tucked the small card in the back pocket of my jeans and took the flowers to the bedroom. Just as I set them perfectly on the dresser, David entered and shut the door behind him.
"Who sent those?" He questioned.
"Just a friend," I replied. Before I even had the chance to turn around, he stole the paper from my back pocket and opened it up.
I watched his face morph into an angry expression as he looked at it. In just one second, he had me up against the wall with his hand wrapped around my throat, cutting off my airway.
"What did I tell you?" He seethed. I tried to respond, but only ended up losing more air. My lungs burned and my eyes welled with tears. I reached my hands up and dug my nails into the flesh on his arms, causing him to release me.
"Bitch!" David yelled. "What the hell is wrong with you?"
"David, stop it!" I yelled back.
David grabbed the vase and hurled it at me. The glass shattered around me, slicing open my arms and sticking to the shirt I was wearing.
At that moment, the door flew open. My dad stood with a bewildered expression.
"What is going on in here?"
I looked between my dad and David. David glared daggers at me, simply daring me to say what actually happened.
"I tripped," I lied.
