I knocked on Jake's door, hoping that he would be up and willing to take me in for a bit. The sound of his window shades opening shuffled around before he opened the door.

"Uh, hey?" Jake greeted me with question. "What are you doing? I thought you were supposed to be with Brendon?"

I felt more tears springing to my eyes. Jake hadn't said it to be rude, he was just curious.

"Oh, shit," Jake mumbled, grabbing my shoulder and leading me into the house. "Don't cry. What's wrong?"

I cleared my face of tear stains. "Brendon found out that I've been hanging out with you, and he got really jealous. When I tried to tell him that nothing's going on with you and me, he just told me to leave."

Jake nodded. "So why'd you come here?"

I weighed his question. He had a good point... maybe Brendon has a right to be suspicious. Maybe I should have thought twice before hanging around another guy.

"I just wanted someone to talk to," I shrugged. "I was hoping that it would make me feel better."

"I'm sorry that he got mad," Jake said. "But it makes sense for him to be upset."

"Why?"

"Because you're beautiful," Jake scoffed. "He's a lucky guy. I know that you two are pretty committed to each other, but if I ever had the chance to be with you I would take it." He let out a sigh. My heart was in my throat and I felt like I'd be sick. "I've liked you since we started working together. But I respect you enough not to cross that line, so we're friends. And that's it."

"Jake, I..." I trailed off, closing my eyes and rubbing my forehead. How come this had to be so hard? "I'm so sorry. I really didn't know. God, I'm a terrible person."

"Hey, no." He pulled me into a hug as I cried on his shoulder. "You're not a terrible person. You aren't hurting my feelings any. I'm completely fine with this. But your boyfriend needs to know that there's nothing going on."

I sighed and stepped back from him. "He won't listen. He gets so irrational with stuff like this. I'm just going to wait the weekend out and let him settle down."

"Sounds like a reasonable plan."

"I really am sorry," I repeated myself. Jake shook his head and smiled.

"No harm done at all."

His smile infected me, sending one of my own across my face. "Thank you for letting me cry to you."

"You're welcome," he replied.

I left and went home. I was exhausted from crying and I felt awful for Jake. He's really been sitting in the friend zone for well over a month now.

I woke up on Saturday, late in the afternoon, to my phone ringing. Confused and groggy, I picked it up without checking who it was.

"Kendall!" Maria and Taylor screeched on the other end. I winced. Their shrill tones weren't good on tired ears.

"What?" I asked grumpily.

"We're throwing a party tonight and you're coming," Taylor said. "We wanted to throw a pool party before it gets too cold and it's really warm out today. The weather's going to be good and the drinks are going to be better better!"

I laughed. "Okay. What time do you want me over there? At Maria's I'm guessing?"

"Yes," Maria replied.

"Six o'clock," Taylor said.

I agreed to be there, then got out of bed and showered. Since I would be getting into a pool, I didn't spend time on my hair or makeup - I left everything natural.
