Shortly after I hung up the phone, Officer Knight was at our front door. I let her in and quickly shut the door behind her, hastily turning the locks.
"How are you holding up?" She asked. Concern was written in her features.
"Fine," I grimaced. "Just a little freaked out."
"Let's see it."
I led Officer Knight into the kitchen where Brendon was still examining the photos. She looked at them carefully. I watched her and tried to gauge a reaction, but there really wasn't anything there. She seemed unbothered.
"Well, I'll take these down to the station and copy them, then I'll send them back here," she sighed. "There's not a lot I can do right now."
"O-okay, thank you," I mumbled. I was confused why she couldn't help.
"What do you mean you can't do anything right now?" Brendon asked shortly. "You're a police officer. You're on duty. This is your job."
"Mr. Urie, I suggest you show me some respect," she snapped. She was quick to lose her temper. "I will handle how I do my job."
Brendon was ready to keep arguing, but I grabbed his arm lightly, to remind him that now isn't the time.
Officer Knight snatched the papers up, tossed her hair behind her shoulder and left us with a cold look. Idly, I wondered why her hair was down if she was working.
"Brendon, I know you're freaked out by this, but we can't be burning our only bridge to cross the water with," I said.
Brendon shut his eyes. "I know. I'm just tired of this. I'm tired of you being so stressed, I'm tired of feeling unsafe, I'm tired of worrying."
"I know, baby. It'll be okay."
Brendon put an arm around my shoulders, pulled me to his side and kissed my hair. I relished his short-lived display of affection. As I stood in his hold, I realized how sick I was of this situation, too. Some part of me wished that whoever was doing this would just get on with it instead of keeping Brendon and I cornered like this.
It was a couple of days before Officer Knight finally called me. I was home alone. Brendon was out with Ryan and Dallon.
"Would you mind coming by sometime this week?" She asked. "I've got some stuff I'd like to share with you."
"Sure. When?" I agreed.
"Let's say Thursday night, I'll text you my address."
"Oh, not at the station?" I questioned.
"No," she replied. "I've got way too much paper work right now to do stuff while I'm at work, so I'll let you know when I'm off work and you can just swing by my place."
"Okay, that sounds fine. See you then."
I hung up, and immediately called Brendon.
"Hey baby," he answered the phone. "Everything okay?"
"Yeah, everything's fine," I assured him. "Knight just called. She's got some new stuff to tell me about, so I'm going to meet up with her Thursday night."
"Okay," he said. "Do I need to come home?"
I shook my head as if he could see me. "No, you're fine. Just be careful and stay safe."
"Alright. I love you."
"Love you too, bye," I replied.
I stayed up a little longer, tidying up the house to pass the time. I wanted to wait up for Brendon to come home, but I had work in the morning, so I decided to just go to bed.
