Another Friday had made its way up the calendar and upon me. Classes were slow because it was a state sporting event day, so people were away watching the athletes of Palo Verde.
During first hour, Maria announced that she was throwing another pool party, but for seniors only. Seeing as we only had roughly one month of school left, Maria decided it was time to start throwing the final parties of her high school career.
"Do you want to go to the party?" Brendon asked me as we sat at lunch.
I shrugged as I picked at my sandwich. "I'll go since it's a class party, but I don't really want to drink a lot. Being drunk is kind of losing its novelty for me these days."
"I have cigarettes if you want to try that," he droned, as if it were some normal statement.
I practically choked on my food. "You what?" I challenged him; he had never told me that he smoked. Then again, so did all of his friends, so I should have made that connection.
"Sorry, never mind," he mumbled.
Sighing deeply, I put my head in my palms and tried to laugh it off. "No thank you, and I would appreciate if you stopped that."
"It's really only a social thing," Brendon shrugged. "I smoke maybe once or twice a week, tops."
"Changing subject," I interjected, shooting him a look is disapproval. "We should go to hang out."
"Okay, if that's what you want," he replied.
Later that night, I ran home to grab my swimsuit and the sundress that I always wore over my swim wear. As I ran my hands over the light orange material, I recalled the last party I attended, when Brendon and Jake fought.
Hopefully tonight would simply go smoothly so that I could decompress from the stress I had been feeling in lieu of school and college plans.
Brendon knocked at my window to let me know that he was waiting for me. He had stopped honking whenever he showed up, for fear that my mother would come flying out the front door again and tell him what for.
I climbed up into his Jeep and we went to Maria's. There were already people there, hanging around the bar inside and outside as well as lounging in the lit up pool.
"I'm going to go get some Sprite, do you want some?" I asked Brendon as he discarded his shirt beside the pool.
"Sure," he nodded.
I went inside and got two cans from the cooler, then poured them into cups filled with ice and put straws in them. Before I went back outside, I stopped by the table that Taylor and Maria sat at, playing drinking games.
"You made it!" Taylor exclaimed drunkenly. "I'm soo happy you're here, it's nice to see you have f-fun."
I stifled a laugh. "You too Taylor."
I walked back outside and handed Brendon the drinks, then disposed of my sundress where his shirt lay. Carefully, I submerged myself into the cool but refreshing water. It felt good against the heat of the night.
Brendon's eyes were roaming elsewhere besides my face. I had worn a different bikini than my usual black one - it was blue and had black mesh over it, and it accentuated me well.
"I approve," he smirked. I inched closer to him and kissed him. The spark of intimacy that I so loved to feel with him lit in my chest.
"Maybe later you can approve some more," I returned his smirk.
"We can always leave early."
"Behave yourself."
Brendon laughed through a sparkling smile that was illuminated by the water.
