┄┄┄┄┄┄┄┄┄┄┄┄┄┄┄I held my Nintendo Fanfare between my hands, not paying much attention to where I was going. A video game soundtrack blared through my earbuds as I pressed the buttons as quick as I could, my strategy to act now, think later. There was a girl up front of the group giving a speech about the history of the school or something. Something about school. It's always about school.
I don't really care about school.
The agent man- Piers, I think- started talking about something along those lines, a kind of worried look on his face. I took a step forward with the group, nodding in pretend acknowledgement. Truth be told I had no idea what he said.
Something hard hit my chest. I looked up sharply, staring at the boy who I just gracelessly collided with. "S-Sorry," I said, taking out an earbud.
"Watch where you're going, newbie. You're gonna get yourself hurt," the boy said with a faint accent. He offered a smirk, turning around. I shook my head, trying to clear my thoughts. Maybe I should watch where I'm going, I thought, as I followed him and the rest of the group up a flight of steps. We entered a dusty room, smelling of mildew and old books. It was filled with old fashioned furniture.
"Take a seat on one of these pure leather chairs," Piers said happily, rubbing his hand against the leather as if he were on one of those game shows.
I waited until everyone else had sat down, before collapsing onto the ornate sofa. I looked around carefully, taking in my surroundings. The past few weeks has been really rough for me, shipping me out of my small, meager farm in Montana, to a gigantic, thriving city with bossy people and millions of cars. Sirens blazed every other minute, and people raced along streets with traffic signs and so much noise. The whole atmosphere was throwing me off. Dark colors filled the room, and no one seemed to be there except the eight of us.
Bookshelves filled the back wall, with two ground-to-floor windows filling the other. I glanced at the bookshelves warily- there was no way I could ever read all those books. I wasn't much of a reader, preferring to spend my time either helping with the animals or gaming.
"Where's the Professor?" Ly asked, smirking. Her tone was purely sarcastic. When no one answered, she popped her gum, shrugging.
"Right here." An old man's voice called. She jumped, swivelling her head to face the man that was supposedly 'The Professor'. One of the bookcases pulled away, revealing a secret passageway. A man sat in a wheelchair, grinning as if he was the funniest thing the world has ever seen. He had a short grey beard, and a look of challenge in his eyes.
"Now Miss Panar, I don't know if I appreciate the attitude. Tone it down," he added, wheeling over towards the couches. The one blond boy, Kyle, I think it was, choked on a laugh. I felt a small smile cover my lips.
"Sorry," she muttered.
"Piers?" asked the Professor.
Piers suddenly jumped. He must've been daydreaming. "Oh. Right," he said, leaving the room. From there, I turned to face the Professor.
"Good afternoon fellow Elements. Piers told me about our- predicament. We have four new seniors with us in one day? It's quite suspicious... quite suspicious." The Professor looked as if he got caught in a train of thought, he stared off into the floor for a good minute.
"Professor?" Jack asked softly.
The professor looked up at her quickly. "Jack, do you know who is in the next Elemental list?"
"No, not off the top of my head."
"James Dawes, Olivia Seen, Hazel Tran, Amelia White, Denver Grace, Percy Stevens and Jack Hannover," Nia blurted out and instantly clamping a hand over her mouth after she spoke. "Sorry," she said slowly taking the hand away. I narrowed my eyes. I had no idea what on Earth was going on.
