"And that's why you should never carry watermelon in a potato sack," Tommy finished, smirking. I watched him glance around, as if expecting a laugh. No one moved. "That was supposed to be funny," Tommy said lamely, and I forced a quiet laugh. He still didn't look convinced.

The eight of Alliot were crowded around Ly and Jack's dorm, and I was pretty sure I could see the first rays of sunlight coming up. It must've been six or so in the morning, but I wasn't sure. We'd been up talking all night.

"What did that story have anything to do with what we were talking about?" Hazzy asked, cracking a smile.

"Well, I mean... nothing, but still," Tommy argued, and I shot him a look. He sighed exasperatedly. There was a loud rustling noise, and I turned to see Ly standing.

"You know what would be really good right now? Pancakes," Ly claimed, walking towards the dorm's door.

"Are you going to go cook? I don't think I've ever seen you cook." Zane said, and Ly shook her head.

"Nah, but I have other people to do that for me. Other people meaning you." Zane raised an eyebrow, but still stood up next to Ly.

"Why don't I just get Piers to cook? I mean, my cooking skills aren't exactly world famous, either," Zane said. Ly shrugged, and the two of them stepped over the rest of us, exiting out the door. The rest of us sat in quiet, glancing around, looking for something to talk about. It was silences like these that made us realize that, if it weren't for Ly and Zane, our little group wouldn't be so tight, after all.

Training was getting harder. The heat of August mixed with the exhaustion of our team wasn't improving well, especially not for Hazzy.

"Why don't we have a Summer break? I want a Summer break," she whined, for what seemed like the hundredth time. Orange holograms leaped at us from every angle, and Nia was the only one who still hadn't been hit.

"Because there's a giant alien thing on the loose, planning the demise of our entire species, plus humans," Nia said, sounding almost bored. One of the holograms shot Kyle with a fake arrow, and he tripped over Tommy's outstretched leg.

"Yeah, but a break would be nice," Kyle mumbled, pulling himself up from the ground. Training in air-conditioned environments would have been nicer, but Super said he was going for 'all of the tension, and none of the comfort.' I watched as Nia flung a spear at one of the holograms, and figured that I might as well join the fight.

I flashed on my invisibility, taking a deep breath. I pulled a chain mace form the shelf, and whipped it best I could at the hologram nearest to me. It flung through the air, reaching its target. I smiled, impressed that I actually knocked one down.

"Sam, look out!" Zane called, and I swiveled around. A holographic blade was pressed to my throat.

"This is n-not my ideal position," I muttered, and Nia tossed another spear through the head of the hologram behind me. "Thanks!" I called, grabbing a knife from the ground.

Of course, that's when the lights faded, signaling the end of Combative Training. "D-Dang it, I was so close to actually kn-knocking one of those punks," I groaned, tossing the knife onto the floor.

"Whoa. Careful where you toss that thing," Tommy said. He took a wary step away from the knife, and I chuckled. The intercom switched on, revealing the audio recording of Super's voice, as it always did.

"Thank you for your time and effort. Your work is greatly commended. Results are noted and analyzed in the laboratory, and you may see them if you wish." By this point, Hazzy had started speaking mockingly with the words- she'd memorized it already. The voice faded out, and Hazzy rolled her eyes.
