Amber Henderson woke up in a cold sweat, panicked. She sat up in her bed and wiped her eyes, trying to calm her erratic breathing. Images of her parents bodies kept flashing in her mind causing her to panic even more.
She didn't even realize that her door opened and her cousin was watching her with raised eyebrows.
Amber locked eyes with him and gave him a sheepish grin, "Morning Dustin."
Dustin's dark eyes searched hers for a moment before he broke out into a grin, "Morning Amber! Mom has breakfast ready!" he told her before swiftly turning on his heel and bounding towards the breakfast room.
Amber sighed deeply and ran a hand over her face before kicking off her sheets and shuffling to the bathroom. She got ready pretty quickly, trying to not look at the fresh scar that ran along her jaw from the accident. Amber swiped her mascara brush over her eyelashes once more before putting her makeup away and shutting the bathroom door quickly behind her.
"Amber! Your waffles are getting cold!" her Godmother shouted from the breakfast room.
Amber clenched her jaw, feeling a wave of hot anger pulse through her, "Coming!" she shouted back and tried to calm herself. Ever since her parent's death, she had been getting severe mood swings along with her constant nightmares. Amber pulled on a white long sleeve shirt and covered it with a blue thick flannel. She grabbed her light wash jeans from the chair next to her door and quickly stepped into the pant legs and pulled them up with a jump.
"Amber! Your Waffles!" her Godmother shouted again.
Amber bit back a snarl as she finished putting her socks on, and then grabbed her new red hightop converse and ran out to the breakfast room. She plopped down into the wooden chair next to Dustin with a sigh, "I'm here."
Her Godmother smiled and poured her a glass of water, "eat up, or Dusty might eat your waffles," she said with a breathy laugh.
Amber looked at Dustin who smiled widely and her and shrugged, "Don't worry, she's just messing with you," he whispered to her.
Amber's lips pulled up into a smile and she quickly ate her breakfast, mirroring her younger cousin next to her. When she was done she washed off her plate and placed it in the sink before taking Dustin's clean plate and placing it on top of hers. She grabbed her shoes and swiftly laced them up and raced to the bathroom to brush her teeth and put on some tinted lip balm.
"We gotta go, Amber!" Dustin said as he raced to her door with his backpack hanging loosely from his shoulder, "We're gonna be late!"
"Aw shit," she muttered and grabbed her backpack off her floor and ran behind Dustin through the house. They both flew through the front yard and jumped on their bikes, racing to school.
"Have a great day at school, sweeties!" Amber's Godmother shouted from outside the house while waving at the pair with one hand, and holding the family's morbidly obese orange tabby, Mews.

The ride to both schools was relatively short but, both Amber and Dustin would be late to their first period class. Amber waved goodbye to Dustin as they parted ways and she desperately looked for a place to put her bike, and of course they were all full.
Amber nervously glanced at her watch and let out a groan of frustration before dropping her bike the wall of Hawkins Highschool, hoping that nothing would happen to it. She then jogged into the school and ran down to her first period class and opened the door.
