4. Past vs. Present

Kriya

As I knew I would, I woke up in the middle of the night. I turned on the lamp lights before proceeding to grab the water bottle. Just as I was about to go back to sleep, I heard a noise. It was coming from underneath. Below my room was the basement. It got me curious, as only the servants would enter the basement, that too during the day.

Who would be there this late?

I didn’t know what passed over me, but I decided to check it for myself.

Normally, I would be scared to wander in the dark places, especially during night. So to say, I would be fifteen in just half hour. But the fear that the evil shadows still lurk in the dark remained firm within. Ofcourse, I knew I was being silly by being afraid; for it was unreal. Nonetheless, it was just how I was. I wanted to wake Joseph, but then I decided against it. I didn’t have the heart to disturb his sleep.

I opened the basement door. I didn’t know where the switch board was. I’ve never had the need to come down here. Reluctantly, I started walking down the stairs. I saw the lights were already turned on. I was this close to turning them off and returning to my room, when I heard footsteps again. They were light on the feet. Apart from footsteps, someone seemed to be hitting something.

I tried to calm my heart beats and tell myself I was simply over-reacting. It’s probably just a rat and someone must have left the lights on my mistake. I went on to convince myself, despite the logic that rats cannot make sounds that of footsteps.

Careful to not make a sound, I walked down the steps. I didn’t know where the creaks of the floor were down here as well as I did around the rest of the house. It only made my sneaking down harder. I must have been caught, for I heard sound of the footsteps nearing the end of the steps.

Soon, the face came into view. I simply stared down at him. He seemed to be staring back as well. “Why are you down here?” I finally mustered the courage to question him.

“Time difference. Wasn’t able to sleep. I’m sorry if I disturbed your sleep.” He replied softly. Again, I was left confused. Who was he, really? He was apologizing? “You should go. You aren’t supposed to be anywhere near me, correct?”

“Huh?” How did he know? I suppose the startle must have been clear on my face, for he replied with, “I heard Joseph’s tone.” I turned guilty. “Don’t worry about it. Nothing I’m not used to, or nothing unexpected. As always, my reputation preceeds me.”

For the third time, I didn’t know what overcame me. I continued walking down the stairs, despite knowing I shouldn’t. I seemed to have confused him with my actions just as much as I had stunned myself. He stepped aside so I could walk in.

I looked around, and was surprised to see the big room. One side was filled with storage boxes with writings on them of what the boxes held, the other with stored groceries and the third wall was lined with rows of cabinets. I wondered what was inside them, but knew better than to go look. I had never been to the basement of my house. Was it too surprising? Well, it’s because I never had to work. I usually stayed in my room, in the kitchen to eat or stay with Joseph as he cooked, and in the backyard to watch the stars.
