Jaylen's POV
"Are you ever gonna try to talk to your dad?" Miguel asked as I tossed the baseball to him and he caught it.
I sighed and shrugged before catching the ball he had thrown back to me.
"I have no idea. I still feel so mad at him... I don't know if I could talk to him without shooting him." I answered as I tossed him the ball once again.
He caught it then sat down on the ground, I sat next to him as he put the ball down.
"I never had parents. My brother and I were in the foster care system our entire lives... honestly, we aren't even sure if we're actually brothers at all, that's just what our social worker told us." He said as he stared down at the ground. "We had asked... no, we had begged not to be separated, but there wasn't a family that wanted to take both of us, so we never even had a foster family."
"Ok, you've told me that before... so what's your point?" I asked quietly.
"My point is that you're lucky. You had parents, even if they were separated." He answered. "You lost your mom, but your dad is still here. He did what he did because he thought it's what was best for you."
I laid back on the ground and stared at the stars above, remembering when I was really young and my dad would bring us up on the roof of our house and show me all the constellations he could find.
"I know that... but it was still the wrong thing to do." I replied.
"Yeah, but people make mistakes all the time. That's one of the things that makes us human. He may not have said it, but he regrets what he did." Miguel responded as he laid down as well.
I sighed and started looking for constellations. I could see Orion but nothing else.
"He said he didn't tell me because he didn't want me to see him as a monster." I said as I stared at Orion, remembering the first time my dad had pointed it out to me.
"And do you see him as a monster now that you know the truth?" Miguel asked.
"No... not as a monster." I said as I glanced over at him. "I see him as an idiot."
Miguel chuckled quietly before standing up.
"Yeah, we all see him as an idiot." He said as he put his hand out to help he up. "But he's still your dad, I think you should try to talk to him."
I grabbed his hand and he pulled me up off the ground. We started walking back to our houses and stopped in front of his door.
"You're not the only person to have told me that same thing. That he's my dad and I should try to talk to him again. Maybe I should, but I just don't think I can." I said.
"Well, they do say great minds think alike." He responded with a slight smirk. "You don't have to talk to him tonight, or tomorrow even, but you definitely need to soon. I mean, you guys haven't spoken for six months. Who knows what could happen, he could die any day now, you could die, any of us could. You can't wait to try and fix your relationship with him, because if you don't at least try to and something happens, you'll regret it."
After that he opened his door and walked in the house he shared with Alejandro and Reagan. I sighed and started walking again to get to the farm house. I briefly stopped outside the door to the house I had shared with my dad before I found out the truth, but then turned away. I opened the farm house door and laid down on the couch, grabbing the pillow and blanket that I had been given to make it more comfortable as I did so.
