Welcome to season 2!
~Two Weeks Later~
Ethan's POV
"Abel, I need you to do exactly what I tell you, exactly how I tell you to." I whispered to the younger boy next to me.
He nodded silently as I looked over at him.
"Look through the sight, and aim the dot in the center right where you want to shoot. When you're ready to fire, squeeze the trigger. The rifle is gonna push back on your shoulder, that's normal, it's called recoil, but it might hurt. As you use it more you'll get used to it and it'll stop hurting." I explained as quietly as possible.
We were out in the forest hunting, along with Abel's twin brother, Cain, and Carl. Carl had taken Cain in another direction while I took Abel this way. Abel and I had been following a large deer for a while, and it finally stopped by a small, mostly dry stream and started drinking.
Abel looked through the scope on the rifle and aimed it at the deer. After a short time he pulled the trigger. There was a loud bang as the bullet flew out of the gun and at the deer. When the deer heard the sound it tried to run, but the bullet hit it in the side and it stumbled then ran a little ways into the forest. We followed it and found it collapsed on the ground, heaving for air.
He must have hit its lung.
I drew my sword and quickly ended the animal's pain. After that I sheathed the sword and turned to Abel.
"Good shot, but it didn't go through clean. We'll have to make sure we get the bullet out before we cook it." I said as I pat his shoulder and he smiled up at me.
He and Cain had been begging their mom to let them help with something, anything, they didn't care what, for a week now. She finally decided to let them go hunting with Carl and I whenever we went. It's taken a little bit to teach them stuff like tracking and accuracy with the hunting rifles, but they've gotten better since they started coming out with us.
"Come on, help me carry this back to the Jeep." I said as I grabbed the front part of the deer.
He grabbed the back part and we slowly started walking to the Jeep. It took us what felt like about forty-five minutes to get through the forest and back to the path where we had parked. We put the dead deer in the back and waited for Carl and Cain to get back. They arrived shortly after with a bag of smaller animals, Cain was carrying what looked like a turkey.
"We win." I said jokingly as I gestured towards the deer.
"This time, but Cain and I won the first two times, so you've still got some catching up to do." Carl joked back as he put the bag in the back with the deer, Cain put his turkey there as well then we all got in the Jeep to head back home. I was driving because I had learned very quickly that Carl was a shitty driver. Carl was in the passenger seat and Cain and Abel were in the back seat.
"Guess what." Abel said.
"What?" Cain asked.
"I shot it, the deer." Abel answered.
"Oh, sure you did. Just like you're the one that finally convinced mom to let us help with something." Cain responded.
"Yes! Exactly! I did both of those!" Abel said in exasperation.
