Ethan's POV

We all sat in the living room eating in silence. Carl was the first to finish and when he was done he took his plate to the kitchen and walked towards the door.

"I'm gonna go for a walk, check to make sure we're not gonna have any unwanted guests for a while." He said as he left.

"He shouldn't go out there by himself. I know that he knows what he's doing and all, but still." Enid said after he had left.

"I'll go with him." I said as I finished my food.

I stood up and put my plate in the kitchen then left as well.

Maybe I can get to know him some while we're out here.

I saw him walking around near the barn.

He must have ran to get over there, because he just left and that's quite the walk.

He walked in the barn and I ran in that direction. After a few minutes I reached the building and went inside, Carl was nowhere to be seen.

"Carl?" I asked as I looked around.

I heard a loud, exaggerated sigh before he responded.

"I was kinda hoping to be left alone for a while." He said, his voice came from the loft area above me and I walked over to a ladder that led up to it.

"Well, tough luck. Enid didn't want you to be out here by yourself." I responded as I climbed up.

"I can handle myself." He said.

"I don't doubt that, neither does she, and neither does anyone else in there, but anything could happen. Something could go horribly wrong and you'd wish you had someone else out here to help you." I said as I reached the loft and saw him sitting in a window with his legs hanging out of it.

"Whatever. If you're gonna be out here with me don't expect to talk much." He said as he glanced back at me.

I sighed and sat next to him.

"Why are you so against talking to me?" I asked.

"It's nothing to do with you. I just... I don't like talking." He answered.

"Ok. Fine." I said, giving up on trying to get to know him.

He didn't respond, not that I expected him to.

We just sat there staring out at the forest that Damian had gone into. After a while I got tired of the silence and decided to try to get him to say something.

"When Damian and his people come back, we know they will, there's no doubt about it. What's the plan?" I asked.

"Well, we're gonna fight back, keep each other alive, and hope they run out of people or ammo before us." He said.

Oh good. That's an excellent plan.

"Great." Was all I could think of to say in response.
