Hey guys, sorry this took forever to post, I explain why it took that long in the Author's Note at the end of the chapter. We're just gonna get right into the chapter now, I hope y'all enjoy it!

Ezekiel's POV

"Boys, help me with this." I stated as I found a large piece of scrap metal.

We had been reinforcing the fence around the back yard and putting spikes around the stairs leading to the door of the house. There was one large hole left in the fence that this scrap metal would fill in nicely.

"Coming Ezekiel." Abel shouted as he and Jaylen walked over from the front door where they had been digging holes to place spikes.

The boys and I carried the metal around to the back yard and set it down next to the large hole in the fence. Cindy was sitting on the back deck carving wooden spikes from different wood we had found around the neighborhood. I picked up a shovel and began making a small trench for the metal to be slid into to fix the wall.

"Go steal some of Cindy's two-by-fours, we'll need to brace this once it's up." I said as the boys stood and watched me dig.

They nodded and went over to where Cindy was sitting and took two planks of wood each. They carried them back over to me as I finished the trench.

"Up it goes." I said as I pointed at the metal.

The boys nodded and helped me lift the metal up then place it down in the trench. I then held it up while they pushed dirt back into the crevice around the metal and packed it down. Once the dirt was back in place we began to make the braces from the wood they had brought over. Soon the braces were down and in place holding the metal up straight and in line with the rest of the fence.

"Well done boys, well done." I said as I pat them both on the back. "Now we must get those spikes up."

The three of us picked up the spikes that Cindy had already finished and walked them back around to the front. We began setting the spikes in the holes that the boys had dug earlier and hammering them down.

"Ok, I think we have plenty of spikes here. One of you run around and tell Cindy she can stop." I said as I looked at the small wall of spikes around the stairs that left only a path wide enough for one person, or walker, to walk through at a time.

Abel nodded and ran around to do as I had said. Jaylen walked up into the porch and sat on a bench, staring out at the surrounding area.

"Jaylen, how are you feeling?" I asked as I sat next to him.

"Angry... sad... scared." He answered. "How did everything go so... so wrong Ezekiel?"

"I don't know son... I don't know." I answered. "Sometimes things just go wrong... it's unfortunately part of life."

He stared out at the streets with silent tears falling from his eyes.

"Have you ever lost someone you cared about?" He asked quietly.

"Yes, many people." I answered. "A boy who was about your age when he died... he was like a son to me... he was the death that hit the hardest... his name was Henry."
