"So what are you gonna do now?" I asked as I walked next to Derek through the cemetery. He shoved his hands in his suit pockets and shrugged.
"I don't think I can stay here." He admitted. "There's nothing left for me. Maybe I'll go back to New York." He thought out loud and I nodded before we stopped and stood at a tree in the shade.
"Kinda sucks it's a nice day doesn't it." I said looking at the blue sky. Not a cloud in sight. "I kinda thought it should be raining." I said and he nodded leaning against the tree.
"No this is suitable. If it was raining she'd probably be complaining." He said with a humourless laugh. "She loved the rain when she could watch it, not when she could get sick from it." He said and looked towards the grave that was being covered.
"Beacon hills is your home you know." I said and he turned to me. "You don't have to leave. You shouldn't have to leave." He scoffed.
"Haylie was my home." He said simply. "Without her I don't have anyone. I have nothing stiles." He got quieter as he reached the end of the sentence and a clog started to form in my throat as I thought about the reason for being here again. Derek didn't say anything else. And I knew there was nothing I could say right now. How could I comfort him when I needed it too. So I just slowly and lightly placed my hand on his shoulder. He didn't react he just sighed. "I'm sorry stiles." He said quietly, but it was still full of meaning. "You lost your sister yesterday." He said and I removed my hand.
"I wish I was there." I admitted and placed my hands in my pockets too. He shook his head.
"No you don't." He said simply. "Before The end," he started, still shaking his head slightly. "She wasn't her anymore. You wouldn't have wanted to see her like that." He admitted and I could tell it hurt him that he had. "I just need to get out of this town as soon as possible." He said and stood up straight.
"Yeah well we don't all have the luxury of running away from our problems Derek." I sighed. "You forget Charles is still out there and he's pissed. He's coming after all of us now." Derek nodded. Derek's next sentence shocked me to the core. And he just walked away like he hadn't said it. Like he hadn't basically given up on the fight.
"I'm sure you guys can handle it."Derek pov
"I hate you!" Haylies scream filled my ear, even though it was just a distant memory from last night. I sighed and stared at my bags packed in the boot of my car. The memory of her voice screaming at me still fresh in my mind. "This is all your fault Derek!" She yelled and I still winced as I shut the boot and walked to the drivers side. I started the car and took one last look at the passenger side before starting my drive.
"Haylie this isn't you." I remember telling her as she tried to push out my grasp. But she just threw another hate filled sentence at me.
"I wish I never met you!" My grip on the wheel grew tighter as I pictured the monster that had taken over the girl I loved. I closed my eyes for a second and pictured it again. "You never deserved my love!" I opened my eyes and gritted my teeth. It wasn't her. Towards the end she was just throwing hate at me she didn't really mean it. I know that. I'm just glad she knew I forgave her for her words before she died. She had accepted her death, and more than that she welcomed it. The look of peace on her face right before she closed her eyes chilled me to the bone.
I came to a halt on the side of the road. I took a breath and stared at the beacon hills sign. Everything I had gained and lost from the town. The worst part, it was that house. My childhood home had killed my entire family and the love of my life. My first love. My epic love. My only love. It was cursed. It had to be, or maybe I was. I closed my eyes and replayed the scene once again.
"Your a coward Derek!" She yelled standing in front of me. "Your selfish and a coward!" Anger laced her words. "You don't want to lose me so your putting all these other lives at risk." She growled.
"Yeah damn right I don't wanna lose you." I admitted. "I have nothing left. I would have nothing if you just throw your life away now. So I need you to keep fighting!" I said taking a step closer to her but still trying to nurse my wrist where she had taken a chunk from when I had my hold on her, trying to stop her from running out into the sun. Thankfully the sun had gone down now and her suicide wasn't an option anymore.
"You are the last person I would fight for!" She yelled. I took a moment and looked her over. Mine and toms blood covered her face and body. Her black eyes had no emotion, no love that they used to have. And her perfect spotless skin was pale and damaged. Yet I still loved her with every fibre in my body.
"You don't mean that baby please." I begged and cracked my voice. Her lips parted a bit.
"Your so pathetic." She whispered. "Your standing here begging for a lost cause. My insults will only get harsher." She said and stepped closer to me. It was the first time I had ever been made to feel small, vulnerable. "You might as well put yourself out of your own misery and try to save some dignity by killing me." I couldn't support myself anymore so I just slowly made my way to the floor and sat, still with my eyes on her. She slowly bent down to look me in the eyes. When I looked into hers I just black, nothingness. "I will never." She started. "Be the girl you once loved. Again." She said and tilted her head when she saw me shaking mine.
"You'll always be the girl I love." I admitted and for a moment her face softened a little. Hope shot through my body. "So stop trying to push me away, because I'll never leave you." I said swallowing the thick clog in my throat.
"Then your an idiot." She whispered but something about her voice made me smile.
"An idiot who's completely in love with you." To my surprise a tear came from her black eye. She closed her eyes and shook her head.
"Then I'm sorry your gonna have to see this." She said and I didn't get to ask what before she shot up and ran to the door. I scrambled to my feet and followed her out. Just when I reached the door frame I saw her run past Simon and pull the knife from his back.
"Haylie no!" I yelled but I was too late. I didn't reach her before she had lifted the knife and plunged it into herself. Her mouth fell open but no sound came out. My whole body froze.
"Derek." She whispered before taking a sharp intake of breath. I watched as her long canines retreated. Her skin became a shade darker, as the veins faded and finally her eyes started to return to the most beautiful brown, I still wasn't used to seeing. She looked down to the knife plunged into her stomach and the blood on her hands before she fell to the ground.
Suddenly I wasn't frozen anymore. I rushed to her and caught her head just before she hit the ground. She started gasping for breath but couldn't find it. I looked to the knife through my blurry vision and pulled it out causing her to scream. I placed my hand over the wound and tried to stop the bleeding. "It's gonna be okay baby." I said calling her baby for the second time.
"Baby." She said quietly and let out a small laugh, "I thought we agreed that didn't suit you." I looked to her face but was surprised to not see any pain. But the death in her voice was obvious.
"Why did you do that?" I cried and she closed her eyes for a second.
"Because I knew you never would." She said opening them again. "I didn't mean a word I said." She said as a tear fell from her eyes. I nodded quickly.
"It's okay, I know. I know Haylie." I said and she smiled a little. "I forgive you it's okay." She nodded.
"I feel so lucky to have been loved by you," she said her voice become quieter. "Derek hale." She laughed by name. "Everyone thinks your so heartless. But I know the truth." She nodded and seemed pleased with herself while I just sat there and cried. "You have the biggest heart. You just hide it because it's easily broken." She said slowly and lifted one of her hands to wipe my face but I could tell it was a struggle. "Just remember that I love you. Remember that I care about you, and Ill always be watching you. You aren't alone. Remember that I loved you, Derek hale, from the very first day." I nodded and watched as a few tears fell on her already bloody t shirt.
"I..." I started but she cut me off.
"Do you know the date today?" She asked and I looked at her with confusion. "We met, on this spot, a year ago today." She whimpered through her, even though covered in blood, beautiful mouth. "You lent me your jacket and drove me home. A true gentlemen." She laughed but then a frown reached her face. "You never were good with conversation." I quickly shook my head.
"I don't what to say." I admitted "What am I supposed to say Haylie? I can't just let you die and pretend to be okay with it." I cried. "I need you." I said and she shook her head."I need you because you make me laugh and smile more than anyone ever could. I'm the best me when I'm with you and because when your gone nothing feels right until you return. So how am I supposed to live the rest of my life without you."
"You will." She said simply. "You'll live because you deserve to, even though you don't think you do." She said and slowly closed her eyes.
"Haylie please don't close your eyes" I begged. "Please don't die." I cried. But it was too late.
I opened my eyes and wiped the water that was forming in my eyes. I took in a breath but started the engine again. I drove past the sign and took one last look at the passenger side. Haylie seat.
