The first thing I felt was warmth. The second was a bandage around my head and shoulder. The next was icy hot pain. Groaning, I opened my eyes and sat up. Where am I? My backpack was laying on the forest floor, open. The first-aid kit was out. One of my blankets was laid carefully over me. Glancing around, I saw that I was in a tiny clearing, a thick forest all around. A crackling fire was across from me, casting dancing orange lights over everything it could reach. Sparks flew into the cold sky when the fire popped, fizzed, or cracked. I looked around again, not sure what I should do or what exactly was going on.
"Oh, good, you're awake." Said an unfamiliar voice.
My heart jumped as I jerked my head to the voice's direction, eyes bulging.
And there it was, casually walking to the fire and dropping a load of wood. "Honestly, you had me really worried."
"AH!" I scrambled to my feet and tried to run, but it leapt in the way.
"Whoa! Kid, relax!" It said, blocking my path. "I won't hurt you!"
I glared at it, then tackled it, trying to shove it out of the way. "Sure you--grr!--won't! Why have you been... Gah! Chasing me?!"
The creature didn't move. It stared down at me dully, eyes half lidded in boredom and unamusement as I pushed against him. "Do you want answers?" It asked once I took a breather, leaning against it for support.
I nodded, swallowing.
"Well then sit back down. I'll explain in a sec."
So, I did... ever so carefully. As I hugged my knees and watched it go to the opposite side of the fire, I took in its appearance. It had tanish skin, and a small, black, blue jay marking on the bridge of its nose. You know the marking on a blue jay that's right above the beak and looks like a weird two-sided wrench or something? Yeah, that's what it looked like. It had human eyes, with light blue irises that looked like piercing ice, capable of making anything feel intimidated. Instead of hair, it had blue jay feathers that ran up its head from the back of its neck to its hairline. Its five foot long tail looked bushy, but incredibly soft. Gender wise, it looked male. He wore destroyed, brown camo pants, along with a dirty, brown leather jacket that flyer pilots wore. There was a rip where the nametag would have been. Under that, there was a light blue shirt. Demolished, of course. They were all too small for him, and showed his stomach.
"First, however," said he, "you need to eat." He picked something up, carried it over to me, and placed it on my lap, as I had crossed my legs when I was watching him.
I leaned back from the warm fish on my lap. "... I don't eat fish." I lied, shrugging.
"Nonesense. You had some for beginning-of-the-day meal."
"How did you--"
"Your breath."
Oh... I cupped my hand over my mouth and huffed, then sniffed. After that, I made a face. The mutant sat and crossed his legs, putting his hands in his lap and curling his tail around himself, back straight.
"I'm not hungry." This was true. I actually wasn't.
"Once you take a bite, you'll think otherwise."
A pause. I watched him, then slowly reached for my backpack, which was too far from me. He tilted his head down and sideways lightly, watching my hand. He glanced at me with his powerful eyes, making me freeze in fear, then used his tail to wrap around the pack and push it closer. I blinked at him, swallowing saliva that had built up, then before I could put my hand in, he said, "If you pull out a gun, young man, you're in trouble."
