"Why aren't you listening to me?" I asked, watching Jay gasp as his eyes became like they were the night before.

"I am, but it's my mutant side that won't listen." He explained, looking around.

"Okay, then why won't your mutant side listen?"

He hummed an 'I dunno', shrugging his broad shoulders.

I huffed and rubbed a temple, annoyed. It was about 2:00 p.m., and I was incredibly irritated, my headache coming back once more.

"Maybe it has to get used to its name..." Jay thought out loud. "Or... Hm.... Maybe you have to tame it?"

"Tame it? I can't even train a dog to sit! And believe me, when I had a dog a long time ago, that was hard."

"You were very young then. Why not try now?"

"I didn't say I wouldn't, I just said it'd be hard."

"Well then when you do tame the mutant, you can be even more proud that you completed a hard task." He beamed, horns glowing a tad brighter than before.

I didn't bother answering; I didn't have anything to say. We continued to walk, trudging through some leaves. I shivered and pulled the coat I was wearing closer to me. I asked, "How do you suppose I tame this thing?"

Jay looked at the trees, thinking. "Hm... Maybe try to have a kinder voice when you talk. Animals respond to that better, I think."

"Okay... Should I, like, use treats or something?"

"That's not a bad idea! Yeah, definitely try doing that. That usually works."

"Got it. Do you know what the mutant's favorite thing to do is? Maybe that could help."

"Um... He does a number of things, one of which is eating stuff that glows. I guess that would be his all time favorite thing to do."

"Does he take naps?"

"Nope. Hardly even sleeps, which messes up my human side entirely." He looked at his walking feet. "Speaking of sleeping, did you know you sleep with your eyes open?"

"Yep. My parents always told me that when I was younger."

"Huh..." He laughed. "This might seem weird coming out of my mouth, but that's kinda freaky."

"... You're right, it does sound weird."

He snorted, shaking his head.

Okay, JP, you got this. You can do this. I watched as the mutant munched on some low hanging fruits from a small bush. These fruits were a bit different. They were smaller, and glowed a slight lime green. Honestly, I think they were actually berries. I whistled to catch his attention. "Jay, look what I got!" I said sweetly.

The mutant pulled away and licked his lips, smacking a bit. I held the fruit in my gloved hand higher.

"Yeah, see?"

He looked at the bush again, then at me. The bush. Me. Bush. Then he made up his mind and trotted over to me.

"Good boy." I said, waving the fruit in his direction.

He snapped at it, but I yanked it back.

"Ah-ah-ah, you've got to do a few things for me first."

He whined and looked at the fruit desperately.

"First off, you've got to come when I call your name. Stay here." I rushed farther down the field we were in, Jay watching me as if I were crazy. "Okay, come here, Jay!"
