Shattering glass woke me up, the sound startling me. Jay was still asleep, on top of me to cover my entire body. The sound of running against tile came soon after the crash, and then someone fell on top of Jay Feather.
"What...?" The person gagged at Jay's scent.
"Jay? What's going on?" I asked. Glass cracked and shattered again. A weight was lifted off of Jay, the whatever it was getting off to look over the counter... I think. I moved Jay's wing, which was over me like a blanket, and stared up at the... man. It was a human man! He had lots of scars and wounds, wore a lab coat like scientists did in the movies--except this one was much longer at the end so it flowed like a cape, had a marsh green shirt, tan slacks, and a pair of black shoes. His brown hair was cut short, but still a bit shaggy like mine. I was kinda shocked at seeing the person, and I asked, "Uh... Who are you? I thought I was the only normal here."
The man's brown eyes met mine. "Long story. Right now, though, there's a statue trying to break in."
At first I was confused, because I didn't know what he meant by 'statue', but as the thing kept crashing into the glass, I realized it was a zyrite. I turned cold and glared at him, annoyed and angry that I had to wake up to this. "Did you lead that zyrite here?!" I got up and peered over the counter like the man was doing. Sure enough, a zyrite with a fiddle was crashing into the door. My scowl deepened.
"Sorry?" The man tried, seeming confused.
"Whatever," I hissed, then shook Jay's shoulder. Seems he's a heavy sleeper. "Get up, Jay Feather. We've got company."
The man watched Jay open a big black eye and look at me, then stood up and blinked at the zyrite. His groggy yet blank expression turned to rage, and he bared his dull teeth as they dripped with acid. His tail swished from side to side as he roared and leaped over the counter, crashing his horns into the zyrite just as the zyrite broke the rest of the glass. The glass flew in all directions like sparkling rain, and Jay slammed the mutant into the bricks of another building outside.
The zyrite smashed its fiddle against Jay's head, breaking the fiddle into billions of pieces. My friend wailed and shook his head, before going back and spewing acid at the zyrite. It melted into a puddle of goop, leaving Jay frisky and ready to destroy anything as he jumped about and spat at the puddle.
"Easy, Jay," I ran over to him and jumped onto his back, gently stroking his feathers. "It's okay... You got him... We're safe because of you... You're the biggest badass ever..."
When he was calm, I slipped off his back and turned to the man, who just stood there. "What the heck, man?"
"Sorry, I didn't mean to do that..." He hopped over the counter and walked towards me. "I'm not from this dimension, if that makes sense."
"Yeah, I can tell." I snorted sarcastically. "How'd you get here? Teleported?"
"Yeah." He was serious.
"Mmph." I rolled my eyes, seeing he didn't understand that I was being sarcastic. I looked up at Jay, who was staring at the man inquisitively. I sifted through my pocket, finding a fruit and holding it up to the big guy. "Here, Jay. Have a treat."
Excited, Jay ate the fruit, licking his lips after swallowing it down.
"I should probably go, now." Said the man, speaking in an awkward tone.
"Maybe you should," I spat back, being in a fowl mood after he rudely awoke us. I went back to the gas station and hopped over the counter, grabbed my pack, went back to Jay, and climbed onto his back. I yanked his horns, and he started to walk away. Behind us there was a blue zap, making me flinch and turn back.
