After I packed my bag and shoved food and Jay's machine gun in the trunk, I refilled the tank with the gas lying around
and hopped into the driver. Jay was uneasy, sniffing the vehicle and stepping away slowly, whining."Come on, Jay. Let's go." I said, patting the seat next to me. "Relax, I know how to drive."
He tilted his head suspiciously.
"Well, I mean I read a manual and memorized it... How hard can it be? Now hop in, we gotta hit the road."
He didn't move. I sighed, then rummaged through my pocket, snagging his attention.
"Oh, so you know what's in my pocket, huh? Well why don't you get it?"
He looked back, tilting an ear to the left.
"Well what?"
He looked at me with his large black eyes and winced.
"No, I won't kill us. Come on. I promise I'll drive this thing carefully."
He snorted.
I rolled my eyes and pulled out the glowing fruit that sat in a zip lock bag inside my pocket, and he immediately jumped into the driver.
"Atta boy!" I exclaimed, feeding him the food as I sneakily closed the door.
When Jay was done, he turned to get out, seeing the door was now closed. Alarmed, he squealed and scratched it, leaving slight gashes in the driver. I looked in the rear view mirror, seeing I forgot to open the garage door. I quickly left the driver, closing the door behind me, and opened the rusty gate with a clang. When that was done, I turned and went to the driver again, seeing Jay's face through the window. I couldn't help but laugh at how miserable he looked.
"Awe, you sad, Jay?" I teased in a babying tone.
He whimpered.
I laughed again. "Wait, wait, wait, I gotta get this on video." I went to the back and pulled out my video camera, then started recording. "Okay, so we're about to leave, and--" I snickered; "--and Jay looks like the saddest creature alive right now."
He whimpered again, this time much louder. I smirked and went into the driver's seat, putting the camera on the dashboard, making it face us. I closed the door and buckled up, then patted Jay's worried head. "Relax, baby boo," I semi-mocked, "it'll be nice. I promise. Just breathe."
Jay curled up in a tight ball on the seat, tail wrapped around himself, and wings blocking his view. I turned the key, causing the driver to roar to life, then backed out of the garage and began to drive on the dirt-gravel road. It was a bit bumpy for awhile, but we soon reached the city and drove on the road there. It was a decently smooth ride after that. I checked the clock, seeing the time was 10:12 a.m., then glanced at Jay. He was still in a fetal position, shivering with fear. I rolled my eyes and chuckled to myself.
"You can look now, bud."
He refused to do anything.
"Come on, Jay. You've been like that for two hours. At least look out the window."
He made a noise I never heard him make before--kinda sounded like 'bwopkkk'--and buried his head deeper into his chest under his wings. I shook my head and kept my eyes on the road, making sure not to damage this hunk of junk even more.

Eventually, Jay loosened up, but it took an entire flipping month! He freaked every now and then, but he was getting much better. Now and then, the driver would run out of fuel, but we would be able to get some at stations or siphon some from nearby drivers that were left behind. At night, depending on where we were, we would stop at a random house and sleep. If we were in the country or in the middle of nowhere, however, we would stop the driver and just sleep inside of it. That was the scenario we were in now. It was dark, and we needed to stop and rest. I parked on the road and turned the key, stopping the vehicle's engine.
