It slipped out of the water and shook itself dry, aching from its long swim. It had followed the non-mutant's scent, feeling like it wouldn't live long alone. It took several whiffs of the air, the non-mutant's scent warm compared to everything else. It sniffed as it slowly walked in a circle, trying to find where the scent was coming from. It found the thing the non-mutant had gone away on, then went to it and sniffed it too, gaining a fresher scent.

Satisfied, it followed the trail again, which led it to a small shelter that was obviously built in a hurry and inexperience. Next to it was a flock of dead cardinals. It hissed and jumped back, ready to spew acid in the mutants' faces if they so much as twitched. Minutes passed, and nothing happened. It growled in warning as it began to walk again, growing hungry. It looked up at the trees, knowing its food hung from the branches. Slipping slightly because it was still wet, it climbed up a tree and snatched a cluster of its glowing meal, then slipped back down and ate.

It felt its energy replenish, the excess energy going to its horns for later. It walked again, still sore and focussed on nothing but finding the non-mutant. It saw him by chance, it sneaking into a 'home' for shelter. It could smell the non-mutant's scent from up the stairs, but it didn't show itself. It felt like if it did then, the non-mutant would either kill it or run off and get himself killed. And, besides, it was too tired after fighting off all those pesky zyrites back in another town.

Later, a few hours or so after it snuck in, it heard a crash in the kitchen. It smelled the disgusting, metallic scent of a zyrite, and left the sideroom-with-the-couch to see how many were there. Only one, thankfully, but still enough to make it mad. The non-mutant's scent became stronger, and soon, a laser bounced off the zyrite's head. Before the zyrite could do anything to the non-mutant, it attacked it with a passion.

When the fight ceased, it stood and looked over where the non-mutant had been, only to find he was driving off. It became determined to never let him get hurt. He could have been the only one left, and he was so small compared to everything else. He needed someone or something to protect him, so it gladly took that role. It would find him, explain everything once it gained its humanity, and then they would travel together. The plan was fairly simple to it. Rather easy, in fact.

But how would the non-mutant feel about it?
