Jay left shortly after, leaving me to be by myself and think about my bazaar life. Watched my parents die, got stuck in a bunker for seven years, been chased by mutants, travel with an almost eight-foot humanoid, almost died multiple times just this week, always running for my life... Yep, pretty hectic. Although, it's pretty good exercise. I wondered if my mission to find other normals was a waste of time. I wondered if I'd be seriously damaged after I heal. I wondered if we'd discover who Jay really is. I wondered why and how I wasn't dead yet. Heck, I even questioned my very existence. So I was in that weird state of just... wondering.

My heart practically jumped out of my chest when the door unlocked and opened. I looked with my eyes, not being able to move my head. Jay walked into the house with wood, covered in snow. His eyes were black, and his expression blank. He dropped the wood by the fire, shook himself, and went to me. He just... stared. Our eyes locked, and we basically had a staring contest. Looking back on it now, I don't know what we were thinking. Or feeling for that matter. Maybe Jay's mutant was trying to figure out ways to take care of me. Maybe I was thinking about how weird the thing we were doing was. Or maybe we were both just enjoying each other's company. In a... weird sorta way. I dunno.

After some more staring on our part, Jay knelt down and licked dry blood off my face. I groaned in annoyance and disgust, but he continued until he was satisfied with my cleanliness. When that was finally over, he curled up by the fire like a cat, watching me.
So, to add to the pain, I had smelly, slimy saliva all over my face.

Thanks, Jay Feather. Really, you're the best.

Jay used his tail to shove the wood into the fire, embers flying as the flames ate the wood hungrily. I looked down at the humanoid, and he lifted his head in my direction, twitching his nose once.

"Nothing," I replied.

He flicked a pointed ear.

"I'm fine. Don't worry."

He let out a small chirp.

"I'm not hungry yet. Thanks, though."

His tail twitched, and he ruffled his wings.

"I'm warm enough, Jay."

He laid his head down, then slowly blinked, smiling slightly.

I sighed, voice raspy. "I love you too, big guy."

He purred.

"Yeah, yeah, whatever. It's not a bog deal."

He smiled a bit more, closing his eyes.

"Shut up."

He screeched, frowning as his eyes shot open.

"Okay, okay, sorry."

He snorted, closing his eyes once more.

I rolled my eyes, before taking a deep breath in and out as I snuggled into the blankets. "Are you gonna sleep, Feath?"

He twitched his nose, which usually meant 'no'. One twitch, however, meant 'what'. Other than that, it always meant 'no'.

"Why not? You ser--" I coughed, and he lifted his head and whimpered, concerned. "I'm okay. You seriously need some sleep."

His nose twitched.

"Yes you do."

His chest puffed out a bit.

"I know you want to protect me, but you have to sleep, too."

Nose twitch.

"You sure?"

He blinked.

"Okay... But one of these days, please get some sleep, okay?"

He blinked again.

"Good."

He nudged his head.

"That's what I'm doing." I relaxed again, closing my eyes. I could hear him purr as I drifted off to sleep, the snow attacking the windows and roof.

I know, short chapter. I'll try to get 17 out today as well. Until then, guys! Thanks for reading and making my book #389 in sci-fi!
